Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

I received some sad news this morning.  The woman keeping my chickens had a massive predator attack. She said she only has a couple roos left.  All of my girls are gone too. :hit She said there were little bodies strewn everywhere, they weren't all eaten.

So it looks like I will be starting fresh with new chickys.  I'll miss my girls, but I gave them the best life possible, and I will do the same with this flock also.

That also means I am accepting "donations" from all of you neighborly people!  ;)   I would love a couple from @fisherlady
s SPR line if any one has any in SE pa (love those broodies!). Also I hope to get some silkies and banty cochins if anyone can point me in the right direction.

Anne, I am so sorry!!! What horrible news for you :(

I will make it a priority to get you eggs or chicks as soon as you let me know you are ready for them!

Quote: Thank you! I would love that. I don't have an incubator for eggs, or any broodies either. Maybe I can meet up with someone on the chicken train.

:) Settlement is Tuesday, and I think I am meeting up with Dheltzel next week to restart with some chicks. And Turkeys. And what ever other farm animal we can fit in my car. Haha!

Oh, hon! I am so very very sorry!!!

That's too bad. I couldn't imagine. I'm so worried that I will come out to that. Something has been trying to get in our coop. We have lattice up inside the wire fence and they are chewing at the bottom. Even if they make it in the run they will have to be able to try to get in the coop.

Thanks guys. I already had it in my mind to make sure my setup is as predator proof as possible. Now I will have more time to ensure a good setup because I will be starting with youngins.

I am so so sorry to hear this! That is truely devastating :( I should have bearded silkies in the next couple months. If the chicken train is going to be rolling through, I could send some along. I just need enough notice to seperate and hatch some but they're still growing and not quite at laying age yet. I could even ferry some SPR chicks directly from fisherlady to the train if need be.

@dheltzel since you have EE or Ameraucanas, would you be able to tell me if this is a male or female? Only questioning now because I seen something on another thread. Please if anyone else has insight as to your guess. Both pictures will be of 20 week old EE.

She/he is the only one I have that looks like this.

All the others look like this. Give or take some darker colored heads. This one is 20 weeks and all the ones that look like her are 10 weeks.
(Sorry about the pics. I don't know why they always turn out so small)
At that age the hackle feathers are very pointy in the roos, rounded in the pullets. If you still aren't sure, have someone hold her and get a closeup of the head and neck to post here.

I will help repopulate your flock. I need to find homes from some chickens somewhere, I clearly hatched more than I should have.

I have been showing more restraint, this weekend's hatch is "only" 2 dozen guineas, 5 ducks and 3 Wheaten Ameraucanas. Those Wheatens have been hard to hatch, fertility problems and poor hatching of the ones that are fertile. I'm hoping these 3 make it out.

Yeah not sure. Supposed to be a Welsummer mix. His sisters are silver colored with beautiful penciling. Someone mentioned Wyandotte but he may be something different from the girls. The "father" was pretty in the picture. I think the girls are trying to lay. I was hoping for olive eggs but it's not looking like that will be the case.
sorry just read this...geesh, i am behind. Good luck with the eggs..hope you get what your hoping for.
So we got our first egg today. It's a small one. I'm almost sure it's from our Delaware Shelby. The girls are so excited. My 4 yr old asked which one of the chickens grew up. It was too cute. They are said to lay large eggs, but this one is small. Is that normal for a first lay for their eggs to be smaller? I also wanted to ask about what to put in the nesting boxes. We tried straw and all they did was pull it out and all over the coop. When we cleaned up the straw it stunk so bad so we are looking into other stuff. Our coop has sand for the flooring. Is it OK to use sand for the nesting boxes? Also does any one use diatomaceous earth in their coop? I've read alot of good things about it.
Congrats on the egg!! it is exciting!

I use sand in the coops and in nesting boxes. DE and stall-sweetener to help with smells..also like to clip fresh herbs and such to make things smell very nice ..lavender in nesting boxes, plus using herbs is a nice way to keep pests away.
I really don't have to use the DE, but was already bought...with the use of sand..kinda makes buying more pointless..unless I want to put it somewhere that there isn't.
