I have terramycin. I believe that's good for eyes. I may have to put some in. I just feel bad. I can't really handle her head at all for fear of hurting her more. I'll just have to do it very carefully. Right now what I'm most concerned about is infection. I cleaned her up with warm water with some peroxide mixed in and cotton balls and I sterilized the needle and thread with alcohol then blue kote everything but I don't know if that's going to be enough. I'm not sure how many other chickens pecked at her and put germs and bacteria in it. I guess we'll see what happens. Thank you for the encouragement.

I was going to tell you that I have some of that eye anabiotic stuff. But, apparently you have some too.

I managed to get a tiny bit of terramycin in her eye this evening. It was tough. Every time I tried to open her eye, she would shake her head. I'm hopeful though. She did open it, just a crack on her own so maybe it'll be ok. I used an eye dropper to flush her wound before bed. I felt so bad! She started crying and trying to get away I dried it and put neosporin on it and put her to bed. She's sleeping now. Hopefully by morning she'll feel a little bit better.

You reminded me. When I went to shut up the chicken coop, I had to check the other side because the doves are in there. Who ever heard of doves having a whole coop to themselves? Let alone anyone caring enough to check on them?

Since the topic of medicating is being brought up... I am hoping some of you can point me in the right direction.. For example, I would like to be prepared with a first aid kit, but it's not even enough to have supplies, when I need to ask about about dosages when it's required, instead of using that time to treat.

Does anyone have a guide or book? Also, I'd be interested in such topics as gastric lavage for an impacted crop and other emergency efforts to help my daughter be more prepared. I am a nurse and she is in FFA. Thank you!

I have personally printed out pages of med. & dosage info. Made a Binder. This is very handy for a personal quick reference, while "on the job".

There are also many threads with information about such topics. They have a great deal of information. Would be too much to post in a single post here.

You did good getting her fixed up! Their ability to recover is amazing, so hopefully she will do well. You may want to check to see if their is an antibiotic cream safe to use on/around her eye to help the tissues their recover, and maybe something to help keep the eye itself moist? I have placed generic triple antibiotic right around an eye before without (known) ill effects, but there may be a product better suited for eye injury care.

There are so many ophthalmic ointments. Bacitracin and Polymixin B Sulfate (Are chickens sensitive to some antibiotics?)

Are you on mobile? If you are, you can't see the signatures. On the desktop version, under every person's posts, they have a signature or list of links and other things they choose to share.
