Unfortunately, not long after I posted earlier, he passed away. I did a necropsy on him to see what I could find. I couldn't find any worms at all in him but his liver and kidney were HUGE. I couldn't believe it. Before he died, he was panting a lot and his comb had turned blueish/purple on the tips and in spots. I was really looking forward to breeding him. He looked so good.

Farewell handsome boy, you will be missed :(

Stake, I hope your old girl isn't in any pain and when the time comes, it's quick and easy.

I am sorry you lost him...no emoticons when on my phone so you will get an old fashioned (((((hug)))))) instead.
The oversized liver may be indicating a long term problem which finally overwhelmed him.

Alright peoples, I'll try to keep this concise. I have donated blood in the past and supplemented with iron, but never B12. I also used to not eat much red meat, and never liver, which are excellent sources of B12. In early 2013 I got very sick with IBS which also curbed my appetite, so I was getting less B12. I'm not sure whether the B12 deficiency contributed to the IBS, caused it, or just got worse because of it. When I was suffering with the IBS, I started to have some strange symptoms (fatigue, anxiety, torso pains, complete appetite loss etc.) I was trying to do research on all of this and started to see mentions of B12.

Long story short, I was pretty deficient (Levels in the low 200s, should be 500-1000). I had symptoms of anemia, and at one point I couldn't even walk my dog down the street without severe fatigue and running out of breath. My doctor at the time tested me for Iron, B12, etc and the Iron, and folic acid were normal. Unfortunately, in the US, a lot of Drs. won't consider you deficient until you are below 200. I believe in Japan, they give you supplementation if you are below 500. My doctor refused to give me a B12 shot and instead wanted to give me anti anxiety medication. This was really stupid, and at this point I had read more and knew more about B12 then her at this point. It is almost impossible to overdose, because it is water soluble. Too much in your system and you just pee it out. I "fired" my Doctor and found another Doctor who saw how distressed I was and he was fine with giving me a B12 shot that day. I still don;t understand my original Drs. reluctance; its a harmless (and cheap) treatment, and if it doesn't work, you try something else! I went that day from being so fatigued and upset, to painting my bathroom that weekend! I continue to give myself B12 shots at home to keep my levels up.

I have a couple copies of this book on the subject and I highly recommend it.

Unfortunately, a B12 deficiency often affects the nervous system and can look like or contribute to all kinds of neurological problems such as depression, autism, diabetic neuropathy etc. B12 has a complicated pathway and is not very easily absorbed, so you could be eating plenty and still not getting the benefit. Everyone should read that book. Maybe TMI, but since supplementing with B12 and changing my diet, no more IBS! :D If you guys have any question, feel free to PM me. Now back to chickens...
I think I need to treat my CCL roo for cocci. He was treated a while ago with the flock when he was much younger but he's been looking very wilted lately. I took some time and treated him with ivermectin pour on and dusted him with sevin to try to cover all the parasite possibilities but he hasn't bounced back. Any other ideas? I didn't see any injuries and he does perk up and run when I try to catch him. I definitely don't want to lose him. He was the best looking boy out of like 12 that I raised this spring.

So sorry you lost him. Looks like he was pretty sick.

My Cali Gray is making a great recovery, I can hardly tell her apart from the other one, unless I look closely.

thanks for the great advice! My little Roo is trying to crow in the morning. I asked my husband to listen because it's so cute. He said " So you gonna get rid of him soon, right? Like this weekend..." Maybe not just yet...

My turkeys went to the edge of my property today, through the thicket that separates our land from the neighbors. They were starting to go in the neighbors yard, and the neighbors had their dog outside. It is a large black dog, something like a Newfie. The dog ran at the turkeys and they freaked and came right back. I don't think he was trying to kill them, just chase them. He stopped when he got to my property line. I'm actually glad he scared them, I'm hoping it will deter them from going in that direction again. They could roam for acres in the woods, but of course they want to go next door on the neighbors lawn.

Sorry to hear the bad news. If it's liver or kidney problems, it's usually untreatable anyway. Hope he didn't suffer too much. He was quite handsome.

I get blood drawn about every time I go into the hospital because I have had a blood infection three times in a short time period from being constipated. I have pretty terrible health, always have since I was a Colic-y baby. Allergies, asthma, terrible joint pains, nonexistent, sporadic, or very painful periods, the yearly cold then bronchitis then pneumonia cycle, recently Lyme's disease, and most of all - intestinal troubles. I had my appendix taken out when I was twelve, and I have had bloating, cramping, and chronic constipation that is only getting worse. I am 17, and this stuff has been going on since I was little. Tomorrow I have a Gastroenterologist appointment I have been waiting a year for, so hopefully I will get at least that sorted out. And next week, I have a physical with a new doctor who will hopefully tell me why I have been so sick since I got the Lyme's disease and the third blood infection earlier this Summer. I loved to run even though I had to work around the joint pains, but now I cannot do it without my hands going numb, my heart hurting, being unable to breathe, etc. Parts of my body go numb randomly, and I will get sharp pains all over my body, also randomly. Cannot sleep, tired all of the time, headaches, no period, then the most painful one I have ever had that has kept on cramping even though my period was over a week ago, accompanied with cold sytstems and mega allergies that made me think my Histamine was all screwed up. A couple weeks ago, five or six painful sores just appeared in my mouth, and my body bloomed nasty bruises all over. I still have bruises and sores when I did not even get hurt. Face covered in acne when I have not broken out before. And a constant low feeling.
Too much information? Probably. When I have my physical I will have them run tests to see if I am deficient in anything. I have not been before, but I have not eaten meat in three years. I hear B12 can be stored for years, so it is possible I am running out now. I dunno. But something definitely is not right.

Sounds like you have gone through way too much! Hopefully the GI doc will get you on the right path!:fl

Great info!

Glad the neighbor dog gave the turkeys a 'reality check' with no feathers lost. LOL now as long as they don't go to your other neighbors instead! :barnie

I have 5 hens laying now out of the 27. We have 7 dozens eggs in our fridge! Lord, what did I get myself in too? We also have 8 nesting boxes, but they all insist on using the same one even squeezing 2 in at a time. My rooster chases the girls usually in the morning time, but rarely gets them to squat for him. He gets his work out in let me tell you. Haha!
