Well, heck. Looks like I got another accidental cockerel (2nd sexed pullet of 11 this season that turned out to be a boy).

Here's my 4 week old lavender Orpington "pullet", next to a buff orp with the same hatch date:

I'll give it a little more time to be really sure, but anyone here want a young lav orp cockerel from Meyer hatchery? Otherwise he will hit Craigslist.

I caught and treated with Ivermectin, over 150 birds this morning, and moved about 60 more to new housing. Most are much happier in their new digs (it was a downgrade for some to move off pasture into permanent coops). I'm tired.

Question: My new-to-me Australorp mix roo, not sure of exact age but guesstimate about 10-12 weeks, hasn't attempted to crow yet that I am aware of. He is penned with his 5 ladies in a run attached to my original flock who we got as day olds back in April. My big roo, Tank, crows to beat the band and I'm fairly sure he did so by that age. Might my new fella, Sirius, not crow because he is the second roo?

That is still young. Crowing can take a year for some. In my experience, 20ish weeks is normal. My SPR began at about 18, and is still rusty at 21 weeks.

Husband wanted to rotisserie the rooster, so we injected him with a marinade/brine mix and he does smell good. Will report back on if he was tough or tender. Me, I wanted to pressure cook him.

GM all:

Cold, damp and windy here....the young'ins were refusing to leave the coop....and the big girls only came out for some scratch then retreated....

funny thing is I am already planning for the spring....

I went out at 7 am to open the coop which was a tad late. It was silent in there. Opened the door and only my rooster came out. The girls clearly thought it was still too dark outside! Usually if the door isn't open by 7 I hear it!!

Wow!
I ask because I don't know! Aren't you worried about predators that early in the morning? I assume it is still pretty dark out.

It's usually light out. It was dark and cloudy this morning. I don't worry in the morning because my dog is out and about. I worry more at night that I don't get it closed early enough now. I usually at the barn till 8 and it's dark at 7 pm now!! I hate winter coming
