We use electric heaters to reduce the oil usage. The ones that look like radiators. My brother is an electrian and he said they are the safest. We keep it in the living room where the thermostat is and bedrooms. (I like my room cold so I don't use one.) just have to b careful when it's really cold because u need the heat to kick on so pipes don't freeze in other areas

Yeah, we supplement with electric heaters also, they just aren't set up yet. We have a big infrared one that we typically keep in the living room where the thermostat is and two small ones, one in each kids' room. We talked about dialing the electric back though because it looks like oil might be cheaper to use this year. I just want ready to start this year lol. We also have a fire place in the living room but everytime we use it, it gets the living room nice and warm but seems to stick every ounce of heat from the rest of the house. I really can't wait till we can afford to tear it out and replace it with a wood stove.

Who cares? They're so cute! (Says someone who has never had a Roo for very long...) Best of luck finding your new place. I hope you find one that you love as much as we love ours. When will you start looking?
Okay, a couple more of those would probably go unnoticed, if they were of similar size/age.

On the coop front, got most of my vinyl flooring installed, and removed the dinky vents on the side of the shed. I will be expanding the holes for better ventilation. And thank the Lord for YouTube! I was watching some videos on how to use my circular saw correctly. I wasn't aware I could make angled cuts before; it will make building the roosts so much easier. The only problem is my sawhorses are temporarily being used as roosts for my birds. So naturally they are covered in poop. Also ordered my chicken guard door opener, I won't move the flock inside until I have that installed and working properly. I don't want to take any chances. It will be a challenge to move them to the new digs. How will I lift Tom to put him in his new home? :idunno. Can't wait for my day off on Tuesday. Lots of projects to do and I pick up my new (old) silk girls! :weee

You are really handy, girl! You husband must be proud of you.

I have to wait until our current house sold before I can buy our next one. Hopefully, early next year. Good news is that houses at the area usually come with at least one acre lot. I like a house with 9 acres the best, but I don't know if it will be still available when we are ready. We have noise regulation there, but no chicken regulation. So 9 acres should be safe for having roos.

That sounds great! Best of luck selling your home. If you want some advice, we had our realtor do a walk through and advices is on what we could do to make it look better to buyers. New also had a home inspector do a "pre inspection" so we could catch anything that might stall the selling process. Both helped us a lot, our home sold in 4 days!

I can't wait to get some! Trying to be patient :)

It's so wonderful!n

We must be wimps, we've had ours on a little bit here and there for a few weeks. We try to keep the house about 64.

:hit. One of my turkeys was killed last night. She must've fallen off the roost and the raccoon got her through the welded wire. Everyone was okay and there were no breakins otherwise. Only the head and nibbled leg of course... Tonight they will be in the big coop. I have most of the day to make some adjustments. For a few days, they will have to use the main door, until my door opener comes in. Now to go and bury Pearl.

Dheltzel, should I get him another girl or two? Especially since the one is still sick?

Eek!! Went to feed the girls and own of my Gold Stars was slow picking at the meal worms. She was struggling to keep her balance. When she fell down that man took that as an invite to breed her. She couldn't really get up and fell down again and he got on top of her. So I chased him off of course he didn't like that and came after me well I broke a stick on him. She kept running away and falling down and then sitting in a heap. I caught her and put her in the small coop away from the flock. What do you think is wrong with her? I had the same problem last fall with a buff Orpington and we had to put her down.

Yes. You should get five or six more.

How old is she?

GM all:

In chicken news, one of my mia chooks appeared....I moved him in with the big chooks as he'd be hanging solo and the temps are going down tonight....

Iv'e run my oil just a couple of times so far....I have a wood stove insert in the fireplace and run it alot....I am saving about 400 gallons of heating oil a year....I do spend a fair amount of time gathering the 4-5 cords of wood...ROI was 2.5 years....( though if you do the wood, you will want to invest in a log splitter and a good chain saw)

Already got the log splitter and chain saw ;) we were going to do an insert but being that we have a mobile home, our fire place isn't designed for one and they don't make them to fit. Eventually, we'll get set up with a wood stove though.
