Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Let me know if you need any more fertility testing. Bantam Lavender Ameraucana sound beautiful. I'm in Collegeville each week these days as we prepare for the 4-H National Poultry and Egg Show. Our Club is representing Pennsylvania in Poultry Judging mid-November. Let's all hope we beat those Georgians this year, they are Tough!

Unfortunately, they stopped laying a few weeks back. I don't add lighting until December to give them a break and (hopefully) synchronize them to all start about the time I want to start filling incubators. The only breed I still have that is laying are the Jill Rees Legbars, everyone else has quite for molting, etc. If you want to hatch some really nice legbars, let me know.

Seems like a good idea. I need some new life around here.

Uh oh. Convert? I'm an Orpington girl at heart. You know that.

Here's a question... Do any of you feed whole corn to your birds? My son bought a bag of whole corn by accident, he was following a meat bird diet that he learned about at a Poultry Conference last year and I believe the diet called for cracked corn added in at some point. Anyway, we've got a 50 lb bag of whole corn in the basement. I've been toying with the idea of handing it over to the grandsons with a hammer and lettin them have at it. Feeding the crushed corn to the birds because I'm worried whole corn could get stuck in their crop....am I being over anxious?

I've taken about 8 lbs of it and am soaking it in the Whey left over from this week's cheese. Thinking I could soften it up a bit and then feed it to the turkeys.

I want to start feeding whole kernel corn instead of cracked, I have been reading about feed recently a recommendation was to keep whole grains in a separate feeder to allow the birds to have free choice and trust the birds to get the amount of protein and calories they really need. Here is the link that got me thinking: http://www.plamondon.com/wp/save-money-on-chicken-feed
(warning, I've already "wasted" a lot of time on that site, it's got a lot of interesting ideas)

I'm so excited! I have a completely free weekend to stay home and work on my chicken setup! On the list for this weekend is

-installing the automatic door opener (and making a door)
- power washing and painting the exterior
- beginning the run.

That should keep me busy! Looks like we have a beautiful couple days for it too. What will you all be doing this weekend?

Hi @AnneInTheBurbs , other than Halloween activities, this is a big weekend for our chickens that we've been building up to for a while. All chickens will go into the same coop in a "look but don't touch" segregation situation. The 4 older ones have the run and coop, with a section separated by chicken wire for the 3 younger ones. There's been a lot to learn since taking on these 3 and brooding/quarantining them. Really glad we did it because overcoming some of the obstacles has us better prepared for the future.

No doubt Winter will hold a number of challenges too :-o

Argh, no rest for the weary this weekend lol.

Tonight, girl scouts are getting together to open a bank account. My son wants to go to the school dance after we're done at the bank. While he's there, my daughter and I have cleaning and halloween treats to make for our guests that are coming over tomorrow evenin.

Tomorrow, gotta finish cleaning up whatever we didn't manage to get done (probably mostly everything. Hang the plastic panels in the screen porch, and make buffalo chicken dip and taco dip. Our company is coming up around 5 or 6 for a boon fire and maybe some card games. I'm sure everyone will be here till late.

Sunday, it's clean up the leftover mess from the party. I seriously doubt we'll be up in time for church. Trick or treat for the kids is from 1-3 then we have to stay for the parade since the girl scouts are marching in it. Then it's come home and get ready to drive to my stop for the chicken train lol. Busy weekend!
