Depends on shipping rate....expedited won't sit at warehouses as long between trucks and should be here tomorrow.

they were sent Priority....(1-3 business days)....USPS tracking has a delivery date of Monday....**** seller shipped them Friday Morning...so they may end up in a warehouse for 24 over Sunday....pisses me off....

Just popping in to say hello after being MIA for a very long time. I won't ever be able to catch up with all the unread emails, so I'm not going to try. I've been commuting to ah hour-each-way job for some time now and it has cut into my online social life.

Still have waaaay too many chickens. I have lots of chain link pens under roof, so my chicken math is much worse than many other folks'. Lots of the extras are now relaxing quietly inside mason jars, but I still have some nice teenagers that I need to find new homes.

I see that some of my old buds are still here on the thread, so nice to see you.

(((((Beaglady))))) missed you! Glad to see you stopping in, how are the chooks and pups doing for you? Sorry to hear you are still commuting so long but glad you are still able to have your birds.

Thanks for the great advice! We're going to start small....maybe 6 for now. We thought we'd get a few different breeds, so I will research your suggestions. I definitely agree that the more they're handled, the friendlier they should be. I won't have to worry about that department, my girls will definitely love that part! Should we wait til spring to get them, or can we get them soon since they will be indoors for awhile anyways? Word on the street is Santa's bringing us a pretty sweet coop

I started with 6 - got them from Calico Creek. Don't remember what hatchery they use. Then one of them got broody, so I got some eggs from Dennis. This year, she got broody again so I saved some of the eggs and we now have a total of 10 - after one loss and one cull. I have a very small lot, so I can't go too crazy. Dreaming of dark eggs and bright blue eggs for next years broody. If she does go broody again. None of the others seem interested.

They use one in New Mexico. I think Calico Creek is a great place to go for birds. My turkeys from there were the best! The Bourbon Reds were gorgeous and friendly without me trying. The BBW were great too!

Howdy! :frow
Right! If anyone asks how many chickens you have, you are not to include anything but chickens. Adding in the turkeys, ducks, guineas, etc, would be deceptive.
You guys are so good at enabling poultry maths. :th
I may replace him eventually. I know he's still young, so indeed I shall wait and see! I think another one of my girls laid today! I think it was a blue sex link, but it may have been the other Gray too. The egg looks like it has a very faint blue tint to it. It's funny, I am getting eggs now, but I have yet to hear the egg song! Maybe it's just my timing? Cali gray egg on the left, new one on the right. Where is [@=/u/136105/MotorcycleChick]@MotorcycleChick[/@]? Is she still playing with that funny sweater? :p
That doesn't look like Pennsylvinia Black's egg for me. Brownie's first egg was very blue, so I thought it's a legbar egg. After she laid 20+ day non-stop, then the eggs become almost white in sun and only look blue inside the house.
I have no idea! Maybe one of my cream Legbars starting laying.

That was my experience also. They are very blue at first, then gradually run out of the blue "ink" and the egg color fades to the point they look white unless compared to a truly white egg. I still like them as production birds, but for people looking specifically to add blue eggs to their flock, I recommend Legbars as the best layer of consistently blue eggs. The blue egg sexlinks are even better layers, due to the hybrid vigor and their more productive maternal parent, but the fading could be disappointing for some people. I'm thinking of trying to add the blue egg gene to my Cali Greys, keeping the black barring. It would be a little tricky to get both the black and the blue egg genes homozygous, because they are both dominant, but it could be done with test crosses, and the resulting line would be pretty neat because black barred breeds exist in every egg color except for blue (and by extension, green/olive). light brown - barred rock and dominque dark brown - cuckoo marans white - cali grey and barred hollands
This one just has a very slight blue tint, but I have no idea who laid the egg. Only my Cali grey has squatted for me. The black sex links look like they are of age to lay, but it's hard to tell with the cute muff/beard thing they have. I really don't care, it just keeps me in suspense! Excited to be getting about 2 eggs a day, even if they are small. Love my girls! :love. Thanks Dennis, for allowing me to have chicks at a time of year when no one else had any!
