I do have a silkie that is broody now, but silkies and cochins hardly count in my book, they spend more time broody than not. And it's quite contagious with that pen. I think I saw another hen sitting with her today. Could have just been for moral support, but I rather expect them all to be broody soon. Imagine if they had eggs to sit on. Maybe I will give them some eggs, they seem to enjoy it so much.

Wait for them all to go broody then give them each one or two eggs to Co-brood all together lol

When all 4 go broody, they cover like 1 ft square. I could easily put 2 dozen eggs under them, at least in the summer. IDK if they will do as well in January. They sit there talking to each other all day, a real "hen party".

Lol, I can only imagine such a sight! Bet that would make their brooding time go faster (to them anyway).

Good evening all:

Well if you didn't realize it, its time to fire the baters....just checked a local outlet and they've posted their chick arrivals....http://www.pickeringvalleyfeed.com/poultry/poultry-arrival-schedule/....if you're fired up, I'd suggest pre-ordering...most of their stock was sold out as it arrived last year......my two cents....

Wow that seems early! Good thing I already went in with Dheltzel on the Sandhill order... otherwise I might get carried away....

Sweet! Congrats! My girls that were hatched around July have started laying too.

@dheltzel. I'd like to know what kind of warranty you offer on your chickens. I have one that may be broken. When I checked on everybody tonight, she was sitting in the corner (on an egg). When I tried to check to see if she was injured, she fluffed up, squealed and pecked me a couple times. I did pick her up to check to see if she was possibly injured. She started screaming, then Rusty the Roo started screaming, and it was a big cacophony in the coop. It was one of the black sex links. I wanted a broody, but not in mid January! Haha. If she keeps it up, I'll have to give her some turkey eggs....

My Brownie, the sex link, went broody at 5.5 month old. But she let me take her out with no complain. And she was very easy to break. We took her out of nesting box couple times a day and tried to keep her out for a while. She stopped broody in about 4 days. She loves kids (human), so I think she would be a good mother. My son still tells me that he is missing Brownie very often. They were best friends.

Aw, so sorry you don't have Brownie anymore. I miss my original flock too. This girl was probably nasty to me last night because she doesn't know me that well, I got these girls when they were a bit older, I didn't raise them from chicks. I'm not home most days, so I don't know if I could break her unless I use a broody breaker.

Lol, the broody bug strikes! Ana has been sitting forever and has babies due next week. I don't think they care about the weather AT ALL.

Apparently not! However, we have had a wonderfully goofy winter so far, at least in this area. Lots of mild days.

I agree with Aurora, they don't care about weather when the hormones hit. My girl, Lacey, just parked again a couple days ago, she will get eggs tomorrow probably. She is a Silver Pencil, either Mom or Aunt to Aurora's Ana, and raised 4 batches of chicks last year. And 3 each of the 2 years before that.

I don't know Fisherlady, it seems to be just Tuesday when your girls go broody. All the time!

I've never had a sexlink or California Grey go broody. I had one Ameraucana try it out for a few days last summer, then decide she wasn't cut out for motherhood. I wonder if she is picking up a desire to be a mother from someone else . . .
 (probably my turn to hide)

Haha, you avoid the warranty question and instead blame the caretaker. We're going to put you into politics! You may be on to something with that theory.... ;). So curious to see if she is there this morning... I am doubtful.

See that, you can enable chickens just as well as you enable people.... :smack

Plus, don't forget the "mystery chick" order from Sandhill. Of course they are all straight run, but it would be neat to get a polish or dorking pullet, or something like that.

Not politics, just married and employed in an office for a long time. I'm become a master of conversation redirection . . .

You know the best way to break a broody hen . . . .
(and I do have extra fertile eggs right now)
I'm not sure I'd trust a sexlink that just went broody to be committed for the "long haul". She will probably break herself in a few days. Some breeds, and even individuals regardless of breed, are just not cut out for parenthood. Nothing wrong with that, they are productive in their own way.

Maybe, but remember Daffodil, my PR red girl who went broody. She was a great mama!

A hen who enjoys childen is a special girl, I am glad your son got to enjoy that special bond and am sorry he misses her.
Thanks. I do feel guilty to separate them as such good friends. but this is the life. Not always easy. I do hope my department can keep doing good after all the changes, so I can have a new flock. I'll know by this summer. Unfortunately, I cannot take Brownie back, because she's DH's cousin's family pet now. At least she can enjoy other kids' company there.

She got off the nest this morning to get some treats.... and went right back. She is definitely trying to go broody, but I am going to give her a few days to make sure she sticks. She let me get super close to her without moving a muscle or making a peep. Only when I went to touch her did she fluff up, shriek and awful noise, and peck me hard! If she lasts, I'll give her some turkey eggs in a few days.....

In my experience, the mean ones often make the best mothers after hatching. Maybe the other birds are more afraid to take liberties with the chicks. If you think she's scary now, wait until she has poults to protect.
You do need some more turkeys, and hen raised ones are sure to integrate well. I find having multiple toms is less of a problem than multiple chicken roos, mine do some chest bumps and screeching when they have a disagreement, but then pal around together like a band of brothers. I have 6 mottled black toms roaming around the farm in relative peace. Pilgrim, the Midget White tom joins with them a lot, but he's a bit more of a loner, those 6 are almost always together.

Quote: Interesting. When I was leaving for her I heard one of the girls screaming the danger scream. It was the broody one, something scared her off the next. But as I was checking the coop, I remembered how last week how there were a bunch of her black feathers where she sits. At first I thought she might have been injured, but I dismissed it. Now, it makes much more sense. Here's hoping she stays put for a while. It will be much better now if one of my girls goes broody now, because I have a large enough coop that I can section it off if they raise chicks.

You said that the midget whites you gave me are brother and sisters right? Will I get a turkey with 3 wings if I hatch some of their eggs?

I assume Midget whites can breed with other turkeys if I raised different poults?
