I don't put up with any after the initial 'hormone rush' of the teenager, should be settled by 18 weeks or so. Any posturing or stalking after that puts them on the list for next cull day. We have 4 roos in our main coop and 2 more in other coops and I don't have to worry. In fact we only keep the friendliest and they think nothing of coming right up to us to get a treat and it hasn't diminished their ability to protect the hens and chicks.

The only reason I am keeping them around right now is because our chickens free range and our girls go all over the place and into the woods. We already had one killed by a fox in the fall. The boys are doing a pretty good job of keeping the girls safe.

I agree with Fisherlady. There are so many good Roos who could use a home. I'm very thankful that my Roo continues to be good. In fact, today he heard one of the girls yelling near the coop. I saw him immediately perk up, and then run over to her aid. When all was well, he escorted her back to the rest of the flock. :love

I don't process, but is you can get your hands on one of those plastic cones used on dogs to prevent them from chewing on themselves, you could probably make adjustments...my two cents

Thanks, the feed bag idea worked well, the deed is done. I was looking for something that I wouldn't have to run out and buy. I think I will invest in a kill cone soon though. Also a scalpel. I don't think this chicken was in much pain, but she didn't go as quick as I would have liked. I am glad it is over now.
 
Here is the bator I am borrowing from a family member. I bought a fancy indoor outdoor thermometer, because it had the humidity as well. The "outdoor" sensor is in the incubator. It seems like it's working well, it has help a steady temp all night. Now I keep debating if I should put something in it. I probably should wait for my broody hen to get her brood going first. The unit looks dirty, but I think it hadn't been used in a few years. I wiped the whole thing down with some diluted bleach solution, but the dirt still hides in the crevices.

That's the same thermometer I use and it works pretty well :)

PM me your address and we will send you out some SPR eggs, our hens are aging so not sure on fertility (our last hatch of them was about 75% last fall) but it will make a decent test run and you may gef some broodies out of it for next year.

We have 1 rooster for 7 hens (small flock). He was one of four roosters and we culled the other 3 due to aggressiveness. We kept Curly because he is SO good at keeping the girls safe, but now we're having an issue with him attacking us. He will not let us near him, and he will start jumping, biting, and attacking. I usually kick him away or pick him up to show him who's boss, but it hasn't helped. We have a 2 and 3 year old that he constantly attacks so we have to get rid of Curly

I'm hoping to raise a SUPER friendly yet protective rooster before summer so we can go outside without getting attacked for once!

We're also hoping to have a Production Red rooster because all of the babies he would produce with our various BO, PR, EE, and SS hens would be gorgeous. Curly is a BO so it's not really a pretty mix with some of the hens.

We shall see how it goes this spring

I'm not one to give second chances to roosters. I have a gorgeous Partridge Orpington rooster, he's a sweetheart, breaks up fights with his ladies and never, ever takes a run at us. I will be hanging on to him, but he throws beautiful babies.
