I'd like to introduce Premie, the little lavender silkie! She hatched (with help) yesterday on day 19. The only one from the shipped eggs. She is SO tiny!

I read through them all, thanks for sharing pictures and videos! I just love chickens so much!

Dealing with a dilemma... I'm allowed to have 6 chickens... I have 8. Plus 5 chicks. Plus 4 more eggs incubating. OY! Drew up some plans for a future barn, which won't happen for a long time, but I definitely gave my future chickens a lot of room!

Hopefully someday my dreams will come true!

Yes, the chicken love is strong in this thread. When you say allowed, is that from the township or family members? The second one is totally fixable! The first one, eh.... :p

Doh! I feel so stupid, I didnt even think of that. I have to remember too, that broodies get off the nest sometimes once a day. Even with below freezing temps. The house is about 65 where my incubator is. Do I get a pass since it's my first time?

As long as you remember what it feels like, so you can be patient with other first time hatchers once you are a pro. I've heard that even @Sally Sunshine was once new at incubating chicks. Though that could be just a rumor . . .

I live in an apartment out in the country. Landlord vaguely said 6. I got away with 8 the past year, but doubling that amount this year... probably won't go over well!!!

I'm doing research on chickens..... Just found out what I want (new hampshire rooster) and what my hubby wants (barred rock hens) will produce black stars which we can sex easily as chicks. oh my gosh I need them right away! This isn't helping is it...

The second one, you just can't get caught! Bribe neighbors with eggs lol
Or claim they move around so much you can't get an accurate count.

That's what I do. The best part is, this becomes more believable the more chickens you have. Once you get past about 50 or so, no one really expects you to have an accurate count anymore.

What are you going to do with the male chicks?

This is SO true! Hubby had no idea that we had almost 100 chickens running around outside at one point last year lol. Honestly, I don't really even know how many we have at the moment lol

We will let them grow about 16 to 18 weeks and cull for meat. We hate doing this but have to due to rooster's tendency to be so mean. We have a horrid rooster right now, so that's why we hatched out eggs, to replace him. But if we end up with a lot of hens, there is NO way we will cull them. Let's hope the number evens out around 10? Then I can just hope the landlord never sees them all together long enough to count them!
