Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

I am amazed! Especially when I saw all those nasty little lice dying. It was very satisfying. I even sprinkled a few drops in the Broodys nest so that the chickys wouldnt be bothered by pests. 2 days until estimated hatch time! I wonder if she knows, she got off the nest every day from from Friday to Monday. I wonder if she knows she going into "Lockdown" mode soon.
:lau Just trust her.
Good recommendations! Bluekote is also great for weekend Braveheart re-enactments.
I said something similar a few days ago. :D
Quick question for those of you with turkeys. Do yours nap frequently? The just seem more relaxed in general than chickens, but I can usually find my turkeys catching a little nap once a day. They like to hunker down near the bushes by our deck and get a few winks. They all seem normal and healthy, but I just want to make sure they are in good health. They look very happy napping and I suspect they are just spoiled. :p
Yup!

That would be me. Every. Single. Time. In my head, I'm like, 'should I run inside and grab gloves? Nah. I'll just be careful.'
Even with gloves I end up a little discolored. I just decided it kind of looks good on me and no one seems to notice. I've got my retort all ready if a co-worker notices and asks me what happened:

"Not to worry, the lady from the CDC said she's 99% sure it's not contagious"

They must have the "lazy turkey" gene. They aren't the brightest bulbs in the box, I imagine they try to remember what they are supposed to be worrying about, but just can't get it, so they go to sleep.

Anyone noticed that a flock of sleeping birds often have one member who is alert at all times? It think they take turns at guard duty.

So I guess they are just spoiled turkeys. I'm glad, they're so neat. I cant wait for little poults. Hopefully the chicken and turkey eggs all hatch before she leaves the nest.

so while I was away this past weekend, we lost all of our layers to raccoons. it's so discouraging, makes me feel like I can't ever go away. It's incredibly hard to get someone to watch over things the same way I do.

We will be trying to put our two together this week if they don't get along Ill probably have one for you. He doesn't crawl in my lap or anything but he's never been aggressive and doesn't mind me in by him and the hens.
I just need one that will protect our girls from mainly hawks. One that won't start attacking me or my kids out of nowhere. Ugh I hate my rooster but he's good with the girls. Thanks for letting me know. I hope yours do get along but let me know if they don't!

I can't wait to get turkeys someday! What is it like having some? Do they get along well with chickens and do they have any problems with predators like chickens do?

Oh no, I'm so sorry! Find another crazy chicken lady next time to watch over your future chickens. We know what it takes to keep a flock safe. I suggest getting traps to get rid of the raccoons first. Then make sure the coop is secure, and whoever watches your chickens must lock them up before dark! I'm sorry for your loss

I hope everyone is doing well! Greetings to new members!

I'm very pleased to report that my 3 girls made it through their first winter!

I was pretty worried not only because this is my first time with chickens, but I chose not to heat their coop (after much research) but simply insulated the interior and wrapped the exterior wiring. I am very fortunate to have my fiancee's dad next door who was able to check on them during the day, and give them fresh water during those extremely low temp days. (SN: I DO have one of those handy heated pet bowls, but no electric in the coop :/ Wishlist...)

Tiny & Ginger hanging out in the cold!

With the extremely nice weather this past weekend I decided to let the girls have some supervised free-range time - their first time out, unless you count the two days blustery winds knocked open the pop door and Ginger & Pepper had quite the adventure outside all alone! That was a not so great surprise to come home to! They also got to hang out with our dog, for the first time without a fence between them, and it was wonderful! Girls got to stretch their legs all weekend, and came when beckoned (with some treats in hand, of course) so I am pretty comfortable and excited to let them out during the spring/summer with supervision.

All 4 ladies coexisting in harmony

Tiny does have blukote on her chest due to some feathers being plucked out (not sure from who...) She went broody for about a month. I checked on them one day to see a ton of feathers outside, picked Tiny up to see sparse feathers on her belly but the area did not look sore/injured. Then saw her the next day with a small blood spatter on her chest with what looked like broken blood feathers? Since it sticks out like a sore thumb, I thought it safe to spritz her with blukote. I'm assuming the feather loss is due to her broodiness and protein-deficiency. She's been getting supplementary scrambled eggs because of that.

Now that spring is quickly arriving, I am doing more research regarding building their run once weather and time permits. I am also considering getting a couple additions to our little flock, but have not decided on what yet, and am open to suggestions.

PS: They will all be 1 year old next month! :)
