I would cut an apple up into small tidbits, then go out to their pen and sit down on their level, either on a small block or even just on the ground. Talk softly to them in normal tones, avoid high pitched tones as many animals don't seem to react well to them. (In my experience).

Hold out a few pieces of the apple on the flat palm of your hand so they can see them. They are nosy critters and will look...when you have their attention toss a couple of pieces halfway between you and them and see if they won't investigate them. Continue this till they seem calmer about you being there and eventually they should approach you to take it out of your hand.

This may take several sessions, just resist the urge to push them...they had a bunch of very scary things happen to them yesterday and maybe the previous owners didn't interact with them much so you are starting from scratch. When you see a positive step be willing to stop and give them a break. It shouldn't take too long before you see it improve.

Avoid loud noises, sudden movements and making them feel cornered, these all can cause their natural defense mechanism to kick in and will delay or negate the progress you are making.

Okay thank you. They seem afraid of the dogs too. And the cars going by. The lady we got them from only had tiny tiny dogs and lived well away from traffic. We figured we'd have to take it slow. Going to try and put Banty roo and girls with the RIR today too. Kinda nervous.

I grabbed my candler tonight and candled the eggs I set last Friday. The turkey eggs were too early to be sure yet but every single chicken egg has veining! YAY! That means all my boys are doing their jobs :) I will be setting more eggs tomorrow, at least double the amount I had last week :)

Awesome! What kind of candler do you use? I just use a flashlight...

So, we went to Tractor Supply in Oxford tonight for a bigger water bottle for Pip ( my son's guinea pig) and some hay --and ...They have CHICKS! Amberlinks, Americanas (sic) "red and brown ones" (direct quote from the worker there) and ducklings. SOOOOO CUTE!!!!!!

Blarney--I am SO sorry to hear of your loss. Did you take that flashlight to your son?

(just kidding--but I wish I had the time to farm sit for you! I would LOVE to!)

I had to go to tractor supply yesterday because I had a couple coupons to use. Then I heard the PEEPS! It took every ounce of energy to leave there empty handed... patience!

Aw, they are adorable. I'm sure they will warm up to you. Fisherlady gave great advice.

Day 29 for the broody. When she got up today, the egg that I noticed was cracked was empty. She ate it! :sick

No signs of pips for the other ones. I know it's still within normal time frames, but when should I think about pitching the eggs?
