Unfortunately, Ideal in Cameron, TX is the only hatchery that sells Black East Indie ducklings. There is a farm up in the northwest (Holderheads) that sells adults, but they are expensive and ship only in very cool parts of the year (adult waterfowl are incredibly cold hardy, but heat takes them out quickly). All of the bantam ducks are much harder to find than the full sized ones (are they called Large Fowl like in chickens?).

I really like the BEI's, but I don't have room or time for more breeds. The only waterfowl that would male me break that would be if I found some Australian Spotted ducklings for sale. That is the bantam breed I think is most under appreciated.

I was so happy when I found them because I would really like to have the BEI. Going to see if I can pay for heatpack and overnight shipping and try one more time. We're setting up a couple brooders with the heating pad caves but not sure if they work for ducks. Ill probably add more chicks to order to see if that helps. The barred rock and Australorp are the only ones that made it.

I'll be in Upper Michigan this chicken train but Id definitely drive down to reach it for the next one to get some dark egg layers and maybe Amer. (Not going to try and spell the right one lol).

Looks like my broody girl only hatched out 3 chicks. Two Biele roos and one Lav cutie. I wonder if my broodys are having poor hatched because it was their first time? I doubt she will hatch anymore today.

The chicken train is a nickname for a kind person who is making a roadtrip. They are kind enough to pick up some poultry from someone on one side of the state and meet up with someone else for delivery. I have not participated, but I have read and observed!

Candled tonight and found that the duck eggs are finally fertile. All 8 had some veining! Got about 20 more to go in tomorrow. Too bad these will not be hatched in time to hitch a ride on the chicken train. Maybe some future run.

Who here was wanting Welsh Harlequins? Cindy? 
I'm going to try vent sexing these. Ducks are easier than chicks.

I see that these Welsh Harlequin ducks are gorgeous. What else about them do you like? And when you decide to vent sex them, can I come over? I'd love to try to figure it out.
