Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Candled tonight and found that the duck eggs are finally fertile. All 8 had some veining! Got about 20 more to go in tomorrow. Too bad these will not be hatched in time to hitch a ride on the chicken train. Maybe some future run.

Who here was wanting Welsh Harlequins? Cindy?
I'm going to try vent sexing these. Ducks are easier than chicks.
I may be interested in the future, but not this year. We just sent an offer for a house, and it'll need lots of work. I may be able to get some chicks later this year if my travel schedule will not be so crazy any more.

I though you can sex them by the bill color for about 90% accuracy? I'm curious how successfully you can do the vent sex vs. bill color.

This may not be what you're looking for, but Meyer sells sexed Lavender Orpington pullets for about $20.  I don't know that I've ever seen Freehling Farms get them in, but if you don't want to drive to (or ship from) OH, you may be able to ask them to add some to their orders for you.

Freehling farm is always looking for new suggestions to bring in. You should message them on Facebook

@dheltzel. Only 3 chickies from my broody girls hatch. Hope I didn't waste your eggs. Next time, I will only give an established broody good eggs.

I candled the unhatched eggs just now in a dark closet. Looks like two of the Bieles were quitters earlier on, and at least one of the LAs had too big of an air cell. Not sure what happened with the other two.

At least she has some littles to attend to for now. @msladyhawke. Was kind enough to give me some of those lovely Bantam Langshan eggs. Hopefully I will get a couple hens from that hatching. They were the best broodies.

Any off you use the heating pad brooder for chicks or ducklings and have tips. I really hate heat lamps and Im always worried it'll fall or start a fire. I just ordered two king sized heating pads that dont have the auto shut off and three temp settings.

We do. It's been working out great. I don't like the heat lamp either.

[/IMG]the silver foil part is where the heating pad is.

. Absolutely!! You may borrow it, of course. Unless I decide to wear it everyday.

I saw the other ones. The chicken was okay, but the dinosaur is my favorite.
I want to get several, and have at least my two younger nephews and niece walk around their neighborhood with me. Funnier yet, a bunch of family (at least twelve of us) walking around the mall... or doing a charity race!!

I recommend the Premier Heat Plate! It's sturdy and since it's not a light, our chicks were more settled when compared to the heat lamps.

Hubby wasnt to happy with Batty. She was nice enough to point out he has some securing to do tomorrow lol. No ones happy because we blocked off some of their favorite perches for the 8 week olds who are spending their first night in coop. I miss them already but my herd of Bantams are happy getting into the big brooder!
