I get tired of seeing this kind of stuff too. It angers me, mostly. But I try not to let the neglectful owners know. My background has been in dog rescue, so I hate to report, people neglecting or mistreating chickens is not because they are a fad. No manner or breed of animal bird or fish is immune.
Have you thought about going to see your Neighbor? You could even say you were looking for one of yours. Sometimes people are just ignorant. I don't know how, with the amount of info we have at our fingertips, but some people just don't care to research? If you are nice, and can hopefully get them asking you some questions, and especially if you are willing to help by teaching her/him, you may be able to upgrade the bird's home to the minimum standard care.
The problem is usually money. But if chickens start getting preyed upon, frozen, sick, lost, then that's money down the tubes too.

Thanks, but no I can't talk to my neighbor about it - he is a really nasty old grump. I think he plans on butchering his chickens before winter... I hope. Those birds won't last long in that cage

I just don't understand people who don't love animals... then why even have any?!

How wonderful! I love cows, how is it, raising them?

The first month was scary. Seemed like every other day they had diarrhea and we had to scramble to make sure we Didnt loose them but its evened out now. Hoping it'll be even better when they are weaned.

Its called scours. They seem to get it for a lot of reasons but we think we were dealing with pneumonia. We lost one when we first got them to it so we we're really scared after. But we started giving antibiotics for it and everyone responded as well as yogurt and lots of electrolytes. We'll be better prepared next time and hoping someday we'll breed our own.
