I may not get to breed my Partridge Orpingtons after all. This weather has been really hard on my cock bird. He was standing off alone with wings drooped this evening, so I brought him in the basement with a hen to keep him company.

I'll be there Saturday and Sunday! Getting my black cochin bantam pullet from Jamie (he'll be judging this time around) and Susan's coming with me on Sunday (that's @LeBlackbird for you newbies).

I hope the break from the cold helps him.

The chicken flock realy enjoyed their special oatmeal this afternoon and downed it pretty quick. The turkeys looked at it suspiciously and would only eat it from my hands and since I want starting out there to hand feed it, there was so some in their bowl when I collected it tonight. What spoiled little brats! I went out and picked up 2 more bales of straw for the run, 2 more bales of shavings for the coop, and a bag of cracked corn this evening to help keep everyone warm. I got it all d dumped in and spread out before they were all tucked in so hopefully they all stay warm and cozy tonight.

I wish I could make it to the farm show this year but I don't see it happening :/ I didn't make it last year either. Eventually I'll get there again. Maybe I'll get some birds entered!

@Auroradream26 Have you been keeping your coop closed?

I'm curious about how everyone is handling this cold weather...

With our new setup we didn't manage to plastic wrap the run in time, so I've had the chickens cooped up for the past 2 days (today would be #3)... Which I'm a bit unsure about. But they don't even go out when there's snow on the ground, even if I lay down some hay patches for them to walk on. So I feel like that's alright? :confused: I've been giving them a bit of scratch/BOSS/meal worm mix in the am, spinach, they have a flock block, food & water... I leave the pop door closed because it's on the North-facing side which is where the wind has been whipping from, and I don't need all that getting into the coop. I'd like to eventually build a wind break in front of the door, but not when it's -10° out. :hmm

Enjoy the farm show all who are attending! That is my hometown and could you believe I've NEVER been to it?? I hear the milkshakes and food are the main attraction! :drool

After keeping my girls closed up yesterday, I came home and found my poor little broody girl with the back of her neck picked bare. I know it was those naughty turkeys. I should break her, but I want to make sure it’s above freezing before I put her in a wire cage.

I have their door open today, but I doubt any will be venturing out. Can’t wait for slightly warmer temps tomorrow.

Unfortunately, when I secured my coop yesterday morning, one of my Bielefelder girls must have snuck out without me noticing. I found a couple of piles of feathers this morning. I’m sure it was the fox, and I spoke to the hunter today. Because we don’t have any open fields, he feels trapping would be better in our situation. He will call a fiend who does that, thankfully.

He also visited my neighbor down the road who has had a problem with mink stealing his fish from his pond. They found coyote, Fox and mink tracks. So he will be hunting over there as well.

It may sound terrible, but at least the fox got an older hen that I have several of.

Thank you! Will do! My Amer roo is sadly not fertilizing eggs at the moment. Just set a test batch a week ago and his are all clear :( Hoping it’s just the cold weather.
