Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

That would be a tough life for her, without any companionship when young, then facing down your entire flock by herself.

X2... if at all possible one or two companions should be introduced to her and then after they have established themselves as a comfortable group then introduce them as a trio to the rest of the flock.

Hello everyone! We are new here! Just saying hello! We are in South Central Pa. We do not have any chickens yet, but will be getting some in the near future. What type of breeds would you recommend for South Central given our stupid winters and occasionally excessive hot summers. Laying only.

Hello and welcome! Glad to have you here. There is a lot of information if you just stay tuned, or ask. Even though our winters here can feel bitter, Chickens are very cold hardy and you could have most varieties of breeds here. The summer heat is often worse than the cold.

I have a lot of breeds, but I am still deciding which ones I like the best. There is a member here, @dheltzel that has some great breeds that he sells. He is in Chester County, I believe.

Hello from Erie! We have 13 chickens (which is so small compared to the rest of the members on this thread!). My favorites are the Buff Orpington, Barred Rock, and Speckled Sussex. Given plenty of shade and shelter, they do well here. Just be sure to have a coop ready once you get chicks. We didn't have a coop built yet and didn't realize how quickly they grow! Best of luck to you :hugs

Welcome from Chester County!
You are in a good location, any breed you pick will do fine with reasonable conditions, so pick the breeds you like and can get. We all have strong opinions about the "best" breed. The very best layers are often hybrids. I create my own hybrids to get good production and pretty egg colors (blue and dark green). Close behind are numerous heritage breeds that were created for laying eggs. I keep a number of breeds, the best laying ones are the California Greys (white eggs) and Cream Legbars (blue eggs). There are a bunch of great brown egg layers (Austrolorps and various Plymouth Rocks, Orpingtons and Wyandottes), but I don't keep any of those.

Good advice, but most of us subscribe to the "just in time" school of coop building.

Thanks for all the info! I may be reaching out to you in the near future!

Arg! I hate when something is wrong, but I don't l know why. This morning I noticed a couple drops of blood on the snow when I was putting out food and water. I looked in the coop, and in one of the nests, a couple of the fake eggs had some blood smeared on them, but there were no fresh eggs laid. Usually, that is where the Silkie sleeps, but last night she was in a different nesting box.

No one seemed to be acting out of the ordinary, but because of the location, I am concerned. Tonight I think everyone will get a vent and overall health check. Any ideas?

Welcome from Cambria county! I'm a big fan of ameraucanas for their pretty blue eggs and friendly personality :)

No ideas but I hope you find out the problem and it's not anything major!
