My silkie Tiny died this morning. I walked into the coop to find her sprawled out on the floor dead. I feel absolutely awful. I slept in when I usually don't. She was trying to lay yesterday and I should have brought her in to check if she had an egg stuck. She was my first hen that I raised from a chick.

I have her body in a bag in our garage, I'm still debating on doing an exam or sending her in for one.

Thank you both. She was my first hen and is the first one to go and so suddenly, so it is very hard... It's been a rough day.

Well the broody flu has hit one of our coops hard the last couple of weeks... We have 7 girls all wanting to sit, so they are sharing now, we will let them figure it out.

Ideally we would have a couple give up before hatch day, we will have to supervise closely that day to avoid problems. Usually we grab early hatches and move one or two hens to quiet individual floor nests with a couple of the first chicks and leave the other hens in their sitting boxes with the later eggs. This usually keeps everyone happy through hatch day. After they all hatch the hens usually make it a group effort to raise them.

Oh no, the broody brigade begins! I'm waiting for Ana to start. She's been laying good for a week or two so it won't be long!

LOL. I think the only reason I haven'y had any broodies lately, is because of my bullying turkeys. They are such jerks, but I love them still. They are surely the comic relief.

Isn't is wonderful when the broodies get along?

Okay gang I need some help. The Animal Rescue League (of my wonderful county) apparently has a Swan that they are going to be putting up for adoption as soon as "She" (They have no idea how old or what sex or species this swan is!) is healed up from her chest injury. The people that brought her in said she was a stray, she has no mate, andddd I'm going to be looking at her tomorrow. And probably adopting her.

I get the gist of vent sexing waterfowl so if necessary with an extra pair of hands I can do that. (I really don't want to but I might have to). However! I don't know how to age swans (or any waterfowl for that matter). And I'm really really really worried about this swan because its mate is no where to be found. I'm also worried about what species it is because if its a native species someone's going to be fined if not going to take a trip to jail. Especially if we find out that this so called "stray" isn't a stray.
