I have my chickens in their coop because I'm not sure when they are coming to harvest the weat feilds. I was told this week sometime. So I sent out this morning to do my chores and saw a couple hens out. My thinking is the goats opened the door again. But when I went to check they did not. Somehow they broke a peice of glass out of the window and flew out. All chickens amd peeps are here. I had to put the one hen down. Her bottom beak was ripped and hanging there. The glass was broken on the ground on the outside of the pen. The glass was little broken before, enough that if someone locked you in you could put your hand through and unlock yourself.

So I am so sorry--that is awful.

The Silver Ameracaunas will be "Zilarra" and "Arian". Zilarra is Basque for silver and Arian is Welsh. Hopefully, they are both girls. Now I need 5 lavender names. Or just numbers in some other language. I think I'll need to band them with different colored ankle bracelets once they get bigger. They pretty much all look alike.
My lavenders are hard to tell apart as well. I found tiny colored ties at Walmart for less than 2 bucks! So we have "Orange" "Green" Blue" and "Red" --not the greatest names, but until I know for sure which ones are staying and which are the boys, it will do!

Mama Niko has them out in the run now, out of the actual coop. So I have to be careful to not overfill the water bowl. Fred promptly jumped right in. So did a few of the others. Maybe they are part duck.

We have 8 batches of broodies running around , to avoid the water bowl problem (our birds seem to prefer dog dishes to chicken waterers for some reason) my husband took 1" hardware cloth or rabbit wire, cut it 1" or 2" bigger in diameter than the bowl and then cutting 1"-2" slices into it in about 5 or 6 places and folding it over to create 'legs'. Then just set the wire into the bowl on its legs. The birds can still easily drink in the bowl but there is now a wire frame about half depth to allow any accidental swimmers something to stand on so they can jump back out.
The deeper bowls get the bigger diameter and deeper legs...

:D Anyone want some ducklings? I’ll have plenty! A Pekin has joined the broody wagon. I don’t think I can break her if I’m leaving Aretha.

How cute! I still want ducks, but maybe next year. Still so much to do around here this year.

Sorry you had to put her down, but it sounds like it was a kindness.

Miss Maple continues to improve. She still gets excited, especially with thher smaller birds. But I can get her to be completely calm and submissive as show in these photos. I had thrown out scratch, so the birds are running around trying to gobble it all up.
