Was right at the door for a bunch of new things, but life changes things sometimes.
Still have an opportunity for bees, even more so with the extra space now.
When we do get them, I will be looking for bees bred from our own area (PA), not southern states.
Nothing against the south, GEESH...just want bees that are more tempered to our weather, (PA), cold being the most important.
The southern bees have been known to have some difficulty handling our winters.
This I have learnt from reading & talking with other here in our immediate area.
They recommended getting cold hardy breeds from local breeders or even splitting bees with someone looking to downsize their hives.
This they ended up doing after having their own colonies die from freeze.
**Scenario:
It will warm up like it's doing now & the bees will come out of the hive, but there is nothing for them to eat, so YOU have to feed them.
Then, all of the sudden it get's freezing cold again and they just aren't able to adjust fast enough, they can't handle it.
It is sad because the people have been handling bees for a long time & they still have these issues with southern bred bees.
Not saying any of you shouldn't, (would never do that), purchase anyone's from anywhere bees, just sharing learnt information.
I am sure there are individuals who haven't had any issues, totally possible.
