I have dealt with maggots before. And yes they can and will go after healthy tissue. I never had a problem with chickens but with goats and cattle.
I am not sure of you can use screw worm on chickens. We use it on the goats and cows. It kills and helps to protect against flys and maggots.

I haven't had to deal with fly strike yet, thankfully. I really hope you manage to get them all out. Maybe warm Epsom salt baths or flushes can help draw them out? Maybe with a few drops of essential oil (peppermint, tea tree, eucalyptus). Please keep us updated on her progress with this. A lot of us learn from reach other's experiences with this stuff.

I wonder how she got this, and I feel so awful we didn't notice. Granted, she has a fluffy butt, but still. I'd take pics to update everyone but it's nasty, and I don't want to document it if she dies anyway.

A few questions, fellow locals, if you don't mind...

I'm on the hunt for a Jersey Giant breeder, have been for a long time. Got my fabulous roo in Maryland, and can't get any more (bought him from a backyard hatcher who bought him from a breeder in western Maryland). Need hens! Any ideas?

Aaaaannd, also looking for a nice big beautiful 1-2 year old Brahma roo for a backyard breeding project. Also to be a companion/ display buddy for my Jersey Giant, Hero, who prefers to have males around, but needs to play with somebody in his own weight class. I've checked Craigslist to no avail, and searched online, and plan to reach out to my friend Kim, a Marans breeder in Nottingham, PA, and see if she knows anyone.

AND looking for somewhere local to buy whole grains. My birds like their feed ok, but the mill grinds it too fine, and they dump or track half of it all over the pen. I used to buy them whole grains at the grocery store, but it got much too expensive.

Welcome from Cambria county! I wish you were closer to me. I know someone who breeds brahmas and someone else who breeds Jersey Giants but they're all on this side of the state. Hopefully someone closer to you can help! As far as your feed, have you ever tried soaking of fermenting it? The feed mill that I go to also grinds their grains rather small but since I ferment/soak it, they don't waste any of it. It swells up overnight and they absolutely love it!

No I haven't, short of it getting rained on. When it gets wet, it sours almost immediately and they won't eat it. I think it's some kind of bacteria, that part of the run used to be a dog kennel. How do you soak it so they eat it? Anything that's wet they leave alone.

No I haven't, short of it getting rained on. When it gets wet, it sours almost immediately and they won't eat it. I think it's some kind of bacteria, that part of the run used to be a dog kennel. How do you soak it so they eat it? Anything that's wet they leave alone.

Mine are used to it and have eaten it that way since they were babies. It only takes newbies a few minutes to learn that it's yummy once they see everyone else devouring it. I use a 5 gallon bucket and before bed, i put equal amounts of feed and water in to the bucket and stir (usually no more that halfway-3/4 full or it might overflow). Then in the morning, I just scoop it out in to bowls for them. Since I ferment it, I leave an inch or two in the bottom of the bucket for the next day to continue the ferment.

I might try that. Gotta find a way to stop wasting all this feed.They eat corn-based scratch down to the last cracked kernel, but this ground feed they kick everywhere.

Several of us are in Chester County. I'm far north, near Pottstown.
I can't help much with the breeds you are looking for. As for feed, I use a local mill produced pellet feed. They love the pellets, and the fines that are left are put into a bowl with a bit of cracked corn or hard boiled egg and made wet. Mine love the wet feed, so I'm no help with your finicky birds.
