Thanks for the heads up, I think most of my teens are spoken for but would have used a swap as a back up plan.

Maybe you and some of the other regulars from the swaps need to arrange an informal swap via Facebook or other social media groups.

We have a Facebook page for the swap already that's growing daily. We all deal through that Akari but we do better in person. Everyone's trying to find another spot though for a physical swap.

Ahhh heck. The heat lamp went out. So, should I just let them huddle together with the wall heater on for them or go get a replacement bulb?
Do you have a heating pad or an electric blanket? Simply put it into a pillowcase and place it in the brooder over a couple of bricks or Kleenex boxes set about 10 inches apart to provide them a warm cave to huddle under. They will be fine for a few hours.

I do have a heating pad. I have the electric wall heater (it's baseboard, only about 18-24 inches long) turned on and the brooder tote next to it. I'll see how huddled up they stay today and if they need the heating pad, I will find something to make a cave for them. It's always something, isn't it?

If you have goat wire it makes a great frame for supporting a heating pad. Just bend it into a gentle arch. I would set a coffee cup or something of similar height under the center of the cave to act as a support pillar, especially since chicks may try climbing on it instead of under it.

@HeartoftheMatterFarm , so sorry for your loss.😭

It really is heartbreaking how easily chickens die. I lost a 5-week old cockerel yesterday for no apparent reason, he just up and died. Still in the brooder, only a few days from seeing the outside world for the first time. He was one of my special favorites, the only baby so far with barred coloring (very clean, sharply contrasted coloring too). He was so beautiful, and I hadn’t even bothered to take any pictures of him fully feathered because I thought we had more time. Mommy misses you so much, Spot.💔

On the open-window side however, my broody Cochin’s second batch of eggs have yielded their first chick! It’s miraculously appropriate because Spot was her biological son. Little Jules is an Easter Egger, mom and dad, but for some reason Maggie didn’t brood any of her own eggs! Go figure.

Doing chores this morning and found my 3 year old Black Australorp rooster dead. Outside of the coop. Most things would not go nere him. He had 3 in speers. He protected his girl. Have no idea what got him. Most of the time when a fox comes they take it with them.

I'm very sorry... It is so frustrating to deal with the predators and even more so when you arent sure what it was so you can't be sure what needs done (if anything) to change your protection set up.
