Anyone order the 15 chick layer package from McMurray? It looks like a fun way to get a broad assortment of different breeds. Looks like most of them are the bigger birds, which is my preference.
I have an order in with them for 40 chicks, but not the layer package. This is the second time I ordered from them and have been pleased. I also order from Ideal frequently and am really like them. Ordered turkeys from Ideal too and they have all been great. Had a couple orders with Meyer and have also been pleased. I find the Meyer and McMurray have a larger variety of chicken breeds than Ideal, that's why I have ordered across multiple hatcheries.

My very first chicks were from a local feed store. It worked out fine, but when I realized I wanted to know what the breeds were, I had no way of knowing. I have ordered from hatcheries every since or have hatched my own eggs.

The only thing about some of the hatcheries is they charge a small order fee if you don't order like 100 chicks and charge shipping on top of that. I usually create a cart at a few hatcheries online and then see who charges what fees and shipping. Another advantage is being able to see availability dates and to schedule future delivery dates...but the disadvantage is potential of roughness of shipping.

My incubator has been up and running for 2 weeks now. I just set the third batch of eggs. I candled this morning and 18 turkey eggs are dancing/ developing and all but 1 of the ameraucana eggs have development. I'm getting excited for chicks and poults :)
I can feel the excitement!

I turned on one cabinet incubator on the 17th, for quail eggs. Then, a week later, had that one full and a second on turned on. Total of about 550 eggs, most of them quail eggs though, the chickens are just starting to get laying.
With demand for chicks abnormally early and higher than expected, I am setting every viable chicken egg they lay.

I have to say, I'm not surprised lol. Soaking of quail, I put in pre-order for some blue scale quail eggs. They won't be coming till at least may but I'm excited and hopeful that they'll hatch well :)

I'm moving to PA!
