Thanks again Karen! They did finally eat the husk part last night, no issues this am! I have been putting a dish with sand in it and they LOVE to take dust baths! Funny how they instinctively know to do that!

Have you checked petfinder.com? Try both their main search and the classifieds section. There are always a lot of ducks and chickens when I search for my area.

Hello Pennsylvania! I have been a member here, on the sidelines, for some time. Due to long term illness I have been taking info in but not putting anything out, however, this will change over the next few months and I look forward to meeting everyone and offering any help I can. For the moment, I NEED to ask for help. The best way to explain my problem is to copy and paste the letter I sent to my closest Penn State Extension Office. The individual I addressed the letter to is the adviser to a guinea fowl group I have belonged to for many years, although I have been "inactive" there for some time as well. I was forced to give my guineas away (2005) but kept my chickens, only 5 at the time but I will have guineas again. I currently have 19 chickens and I find that they are sweeter than the guneas and they don't range as far away, and besides being easier to care for, Chickens are CUDDLY! AND, they lay better eggs! Here goes:

You may or may not remember meeting me, my message board name when I was active was XXXXXX and I live just 1 and 1/2 to 2 hours from State College, in the Poconos. Perhaps you may recall that I remain a XXXX member but no longer have any guineas due to a turn-coat neighbor.
On August 3, 2011, I experienced a catastrophic accident with my car and a Tree. Currently, my activity is limited to inside my house and the doctors are talking about "going back in". I keep Speckled Sussex Chickens - they are considered a "heritage breed". I have had a "closed" flock for three years: the only exposure they may have to any biohazard(s) is exposure to the wild turkeys who occasionally visit our yard. I have been keeping two roosters since July 1, 2011, "Fletcher" and his son, "Russell" who, officially
"changed" from cockerel to rooster on that date. I was carefully "managing" the two to prevent conflict "pre-Tree" but with my limited movement I am now unable to continue close observation into the winter when close quarters may cause the two to come to blows. Additionally, we were blessed with another pure bred Speckled Sussex when a cockerel hatched on July 30th.
I am seeking a new home for both Fletcher and the young cockerel, hopefully with a 4-H member, but at least with a qualified person who can "retire" Fletcher and possibly train and prepare the cockerel for show. If that is not possible, I am happy to just move them to a "safer" environment(s) and, of course, this is considered a "gift". The cockerel, appears to be a lot like Fletcher's son, Russell. This means he will likely be BIGGER and prettier than "Dad"... my Russell is a stunner!

Welcome PA-mamahen. Sorry to hear about your accident and I hope the fusion brings some relief and healing.

Why do you want to get rid of the roos? It wasn't clear to me in that letter. As long as you have 8-10 hens per roo, there is peace in the flock. Since you have 19...you'd be good.
