I am having a bad morning. I went to let the girls out, and found two eggs (after no eggs yesterday, ANY eggs makes me happy). One of them pretty much had no shell. I saw a partial soft shell, but this is getting ridiculous! I am pretty sure it will be fine in the Spring since she has only been doing this for a month or so (I mean imperfect eggs), and I occasionally get a good egg from her.
The next problem is that Red has been snapping at me. I thought I was imagining it at first when he would peck at the back of my boot (or occasionally leg). It was like he was bumping into me, and I ignored it. Then two days ago he actually ran at me in attack mode. I have never done a thing to stress him out. Never chased him, I always knew he was going to be my special boy. Is it a teen thing?

Are you giving oyster shell to the girls??

Man, I hated taking those roos to auction!! But I just had to free up some room and I had 3 roos and 3 girls. Not a good split for breeding purposes. How do you all handle your excess roos? I had them on CL for a good long time.

Yeah, I am doing everything "right". It is just her. When I adopted her, and 3 sisters, they were about 2 1/2 -years- old. Until about a month ago each girl gave me an egg a day, and once I got an extra. No exceptions, every single day. I give them layer feed, oyster, grit, vegetables, some fruit, cracked corn, fresh water (just started using ACV yesterday) ... I do NOT use a light to make them lay.
Nothing "happened" to make her do this. My only suspicion is that they guy WAS making them lay through the winter, and she is tired. That is why I think it will be okay after a molt. The irony is that while the others (her sisters) have slowed down, she is giving me an egg about 5 or 6 times a week. Very few have been soft shell. They are just light. In fact, they were light, and hard as a rock. Like the calcium in her body can't regulate.
Anyway, just too bad it was a wasted egg.
Red might find himself sitting at the computer for a few days. I can show him pictures of roasted and fried chicken. Maybe open the freezer, and show him Jack, Joey, Stew, and Pot Pie.

Good morning all !!! (morning for me, getting to old for this swing sjift crap )...Patrick , I am not very good at sexing birds , but I only seen 1 hen in those pictures, and not knowing the background on these one's could make it tougher...,

For those of you asking about quail housing,,,,They are not quite the same as chickens, if they get loose, chances are they are gone...I use dog crates for cages..(the wire kind)...I put wire across the bottom, that way everything drops into the slide out tray underneath..I also wrap hardware cloth on the outside of these cages when the quail are young, they will slip right thru the slots if you don.t.....remember that quail hatch out about the size of a quarter, sometimes smaller.
