They are in the Rare breed Brahma sections.... Dark Brahma is one of the oldest and most established of the varieties. Its color pattern is known as Silver Penciled which consists of a lustrous greenish-black base color with a narrow edging of slivery white around the neck, saddle, and tail. To see these feathers shine in the sunlight is truly a sight to behold.

Hey All! Here is the program recommended in Pa for the backyard flock owners. If anyone wants a copy of this shoot me an email and I will send it to you. Attached to it is an application as well as an outline of the program including the age of birds to be tested. My email is [email protected]

HEY ALL!!!!!!!!!!

Okay. Looking at holding a meeting with Dr. Hanshaw and Dr. Martin with as many of us as possible. And with this we could get all our questions answered, learn about the standards for bio-security, requirements for meeting state regulations as well as info on the programs available in Pennsylvania including the NPIP and the PEP. Dr. Hanshaw made available that we could schedule it together for those that wish to get the Chicken Tech training could get that in the same day as well. I have the applications for the PEP program and will have the Poultry Tech application and information as well.

Looking at holding it at Harrisburg so we can accomidate a lil bit of everyone. Including our State College area friends by making it more centralized for everyone. Most likely a saturday. I need to get an idea of how many people would attend and than we need to get dates together so I can get it arranged.

Sally my silkie has hatched some silver laced wyandottes. She still has some eggs but I have seen 3 peeps so far, one under each wing and 1 under her fuzzy butt.

FWIW, 7-8 years ago, I accompanied a friend who wanted to learn to test in order to help her 4H kids, to one of these training sessions. Part of the program was to learn to draw blood from a chicken, and we were provided with (dirty, stinky) spent layers to practice on. For biosecurity reasons, we were expected to kill them when finished. The way this process was handled was icky, and this coming from someone who does butcher my own birds.

IIRC, NPIP certification requires concrete or other easily disinfectable surfaces on all housing areas. Since I don't have $ for concrete, and because of concerns with privacy and NAIS which was an issue at the time, I didn't pursure the NPIP any further.

No, I do not worm my birds. I don't see worms, I don't treat for worms. If I let the cats near them, I would be more concerned. The cats may be used to dogs, but since moving in, the cats have pretty much stayed out of the yard. I guess Sturgis is enough to keep them at bay.
Bruce, the bird in question is a Red of some kind. Guessing Red Star. She is from a feed mill. The poop varies, but is normal according to the poop chart. I thought they were molting, and maybe she is. A slow molt if anyone is. No bald spots, but I had a ton of down around the nest box about two weeks ago. Now I am finding some nice feathers laying around (but that could be just the chicks as they are growing.).
Out of curiosity, can chicks have a growth spurt in a few hours? I swear to tell you that the chicks all got huge after eating the pumpkin oatmeal (Popeye with spinach) this morning!
Red seems to have a problem with my sneakers. I have boots, but sometimes I just don't feel like putting them on just to grab a feeder/ waterer. It was the laces he started noticing this past week. Never noticed them before. Guess as the only care taker now, he is taking the job of husband very seriously. I am still holding him, but I am also not wearing my sneakers. It was stupid anyway. I wear them to TSC.
more than likely if she is a red star or some variation , production bird she is at the end of her egg cycle. these type birds lay for 2-3 years and quit. she may be going into a molt. however in the spring she may lay some but not good. i have read your posts and pm's .you take care of your birds.
i don't worm either just don't have the need.

The way they are handling the training now is to bring your own birds and they are having everyone apart from one another to keep clean. And on the NPIP regs, yeah that is why they are pushing the PEP. Less regs while still testing and working on flock security.
