I was told that pit bulls were given the name because of the "pits" they were fought in. (don't know that for sure, but it's just a tid bit to pass on.)
I am the proud owner of a pit. He is sweet, loving, extremly playful, and will guard his chickens, and goat, and quail, and the little chicks (australorps),with his life. he will get all uptight and come and tell me if he sees out the window that there are birds too close to the pens, (usually picking up what ever tidbits I dropped. )
he won't attack the little birds, he likes to bark, one loud bark, and watch them scatter. And then he makes sure that "his" animals are all OK.
I know that being a pit owner, there is a lot of responsibilities, that most people don't realize that. they need extra care, and training, attention,(especially attention.) and they are stubborn. Mine is super smart, but stubborn as heck.
When people realize that they have their hands full, or did not train them properly, they just take them to the shelter. the sad part is if they don't pass "the test" and most untrained pits don't, they get put down.
what I mean by extra attention is pitbulls go through seperation anxiety. if you leave them alone, they tear the house apart. we tried and tried to break him of that, and well, instead of leaving him at home, he rides with us. even if left alone in the truck, he won't tear anything up. he knows if he does, he won't get his fishy cookie.
my pit could have been a show dog. he's absolutly beautiful. He gets all kinds of comments, and we get asked if we breed him. I won't. i wouldn't want his pups fall into the wrong hands, and I don't what to be responsible for that, no matter how much $$$ the pups would bring in.
we also live by a long dirt road, that has no houses on it. it is the place where everyone likes to dump their unwanteds. I have seen many starving dogs, dead cats, pigs, yes pigs...it is cruel. and yet, no one really does anything about it. (a large majority of the dogs I have seen are pits, most likely because it tore up someone's house.)
so people please, if one conciders getting a pit bull, one needs to concider the giant responsibility that goes a long with it.
otherwise they wind up as another sad posting.
