People ever give you a hard time about...

I keep chickens for eggs as alot of people on BYC do. However, I don't understand how you can have a flock - even a small backyard flock - without being able to process them. For me, managing a flock of layers includes butchering when necessary. Hens which aren't productive go to the soup pot and excess roos for meat. In the event of injury or disease I think a responsible chicken owner should be able to cull a bird. The more I'm around my layers the more I'm leaning toward raising my own meat birds too. It's a great feeling to raise your own food!

Too bad most people think I'm "barbaric" and my own DH doesn't want to be around if I cull. What's up with that?

My husband is the executioner at our place. However, the two roosters I did myself, it wasn't as hard as I thought, but I still can't dispatch my rabbits. Hubby uses a .22 for that, it is quick and humane.

>>ok this brings up an interesting point for me....We've processed quail and did ok with that but I think any chickens that need done will go to a processor. I've thought about raising rabbits and have read up on the different ways to dispatch them but had never seen the old shotgun method! I don't think we could do the killing any other way so it's good to see it is possible to just shoot them as if you were hunting. Ok may sound dumb but exactly how does he go about that? Kristi

I'm too afraid that if I went after the cat with an axe I would not come out the victor in the battle. Those things are pointy on five of their six ends. Much safer to eat chicken.

My husband got some heck for bringing in lunch instead of going out to eat with his coworkers. Then he shared his lunch a couple times. Now we get phone calls asking if I'll send enough for the main crew and they'll reimburse me.

There is already a long list of folks who have generously volunteered, entirely out of the goodness of their hearts, to take any excess veggies/fruits/preserves/baked goods/eggs/meat off our hands. Their kindness positively overwhelms me.

Good news is the first time I slaughter a bunch of roos, there are going to be a half dozen guys out to determine once and for all which of them can pluck a chicken fastest.

The sales folk in the front office are utterly appalled. Doesn't stop them from coming in and stealing the leftovers when I send in baked goods.

The guys want me to raise some rabbits too, even offered to build the hutch and buy the first rabbits. I said no. It's not that I couldn't kill them, it's I'm too worried that after having put up with my sister's pet rabbit for 3 years I'd enjoy killing them.

Someone was very angry with me and asked if I would eat my cats because they were members of the family too.

The simple answer to that one is "Yes, I would!" and the dog too!

The only reason I keep feeding the dog (instead of the other way round

) is she is protection for the kids when they play outside. The amount it costs to feed our so called pets makes me cringe every month, at least my chickens and turkeys gave back to the house hold in eggs and meat and could eat teh leftovers that give the dog an upset stomach

I so much preferred getting eggs back instead of doggy diarrhea

Co workers all my life have pegged me as vegetarian because I care about how animals are kept and are always surprised when I eat meat, its like you arnt allowed to care about animals adn still eat them.

I get that where I work also. There are women in my office who rescue every stray in the neighborhood and feel that their compassion encompasses everyone else's....but they won't kill an animal that is suffering or kill one for food. They will gladly eat packaged meats from the store and don't feel this smells of hypocrisy at all.

I gave up trying to explain to people why I raise my own meat birds and layers, and process them when the time comes,When they make the remark (I don,t see how you can do that),,I just agree with them.

i get the "i could never do that!" a lot but what i tell them is 'yes you could' and then i tell them its not what they think it is.

My Siamese used to bring me rattlesnakes he'd killed and once nearly killed a pit bull.

I know how I'd fair if I tackled either critter. I pay proper homage to my feline overlords.
