People Please! Stop talking about your chickens!

Yeaaaaaaah I have just figured out that ducks are just as addicting as chickens....

I started out with 1 White Pekin Drake and 1 Black Runner drake....that lead to they need mates...and someone gifted me a Khaki Campbell duck and two Rouen Ducks and a Runner duck and a Mallard Drake...well then I needed same breed mates for the Rouen ducks, so we ordered 2 males, and I need a girlfriend for the mallard, so we bought 6 Mallard ducklings at TSC...and the Pekin was still by himself so we bought 2 female Pekins...........and I bought a second blue swedish so my only blue swedish duck wouldn't be by herself (or the only one of her kind) and then my friend mentioned Welsh Harlequins, so now I have 4 of those...........and last week I picked up 5 call ducks, have muscovies on the way, and will be getting a pair of Mandarins soon!

ETA: I forgot about the pair of Khaki's I'm picking up in the next week....

The most fun I've had so far is hatching out my own - under a broody hen - a sweet and very tolerant Wyandotte by the way! You NEED to do this.

and plan to get quail maybe...

My recommendations: 1.Build a big barn and move walls around inside. 2. buy in quanities of 100 at a time is cheaper. 3. vaccinations are cost effective 4. Buy the biggest incubator possible 5. do not hold your chickens or u will name them and want more

Don't be knocking the wyandotte. They may not be the kind of chicken that climbs into your lap for a scratch but they also don't take flack off my roo and are a great free ranging breed.

One of my favourite past times with my wyandotte girls is to watch them take the roo down a peg or two for his amorous presumptions.

Oh you neeeeeed Wyandottes. They're my favorite breed. Nice layers, decent meat from the extra roos, friendly and sometimes broody. How can you resist this???

Also you will certainly NEED blue and lavender orpingtons.

Hiker, I feel your pain! I started off wanting just one chicken. That would be enough for DH and I eggs I thought. Then I found out that they are companion animals and had to get two. While ordering these TWO chickens I found EE that lay green/blue eggs. Then here comes BYC and the wonderful people telling me I should get these and showing pictures and whatnot..it just doesnt stop.

Now my two chickens have turned into nineteen chickens with hatching eggs on the way. And my orginal "I only need an 8x8 coop" is out the window and we're building a 12x12 coop. But shuuuu dont tell hubby how many can really fit in an 12x12, he doesnt know.

I really think that little banner on the front page of BYC should be a lot bigger than it is. You know the one that says "Warning, BYC and chickens are contagious."
