We are missing eggs and it MAY not be a WILD predator but a HUMAN. When we leave we lock the door with a latch thingy and bricks. When we come back the latch thingy is back up and all the eggs are gone, but the bricks are in place. What is up?

As this Depression gets worse, there's going to be more of this.

Video cameras, etc can help catch your thief, the best thing I'd think, is to see if you can get them started keeping chickens too.

OMG! No way! That person fails! I think we are going to go to the junk place and find sturdier doors and locks and possibly also padlock it lol then we are going to fence the inside corners and walls then we are going to fence the bottom half of the coop just for safe measures

Did the person get in trouble? <<< kekeke

It seems to me more likely that your chickens have turned into egg eaters themselves. But, the explanation of the situation isn't totally clear, so I could be wrong.

Anyway, a good padlock should hamper the casual thief. Nothing will stop the truly dedicated if the reward is good enough -- look at the lengths some of the professionals have gone through to carry off art thefts and high yield bank robberies. I doubt anyone would go to that extreme for a few eggs.

I'm an oddball...but what I would do is write a letter and leave it taped to the door of the coop that says something like: I noticed we're coming up short on eggs and have come to the conclusion that someone must be taking them. Times are hard and I need the eggs to feed my family, but I do understand if you have reached the point of desperation that you feel the need to take from me. However, you should know that I am the type of person who would give the shirt off my back to someone in need and so for you to steal from me is very heartbreaking. If you will only ask, I will give you a few eggs on occasion so that we both have what we need to feed our families. If you come to me and explain your need, I will not hold any of this against you. You don't even have to admit to having taken anything, simply say "could I please have a few eggs to feed my family". However, if you won't respect me enough to ask permission, I will have to start setting up a camera and will notify the authorities when I see you taking from me because even though times are tough, all you have to do is ask.

Guilt usually helps.

Lots of ex-middle-class out there, lots of hungry kids.

I like the idea of a letter, maybe not that wordy, but it's a good idea.

The idea is, get in touch with the person and get 'em set up keeping their own chickens. Then they can eat, and they're not eating on your dime. The old "teach a man to fish....." idea.

I focus more on prevention then on catching. Much less stressful, be it a human or a 4 legged predator.
