I must be really naive. It never occurred to me that this sort of thing happens in a ceramics class. I hate a thief! I am very pessimistic of the human race and I don't watch that much TV. I guess that is why many of us turn to BYC and our pets. Didn't anyone in your class have a clue who the thief might be with those initials? I have said on this board before that I almost had a handmade wall quilt stolen and I was furious that anyone even touched it. Such a violation of trust. Hope you find the scumbag even if it is just to confront him.

Since I don't trust ANYONE, May I suggest keeping a small cheap digital camera, photograph EVERYTHING you make (even if its garbage) from two sides. That way you have DOCUMENTED that YOU made it and not some other creep.
Try to get a pic with you holding it showing your initials carved in it, then even if they change it you still have proof..

I talked my stepson into pressing the side of his highschool class ring leaving a small impression that only HE knew ment anything but to casual observer just looks like a mark.
