I went to buy feed today at mt feed store, I have talked to this guy who loads the feed a few times. We were talking about our chickens and and chicks and I asked him what do you feed your chicks? He said he starts them on chick starter for a month and then he just gives them scratch till the point of lay:th. Well I am no chicken food expert so, I say I thought you are not supposed to feed sctatch in the summer WE LIVE IN IDAHO WERE IT IS 95-105 July-Aug. It makes them to hot it is for winter months to warm them up. He says I have never heard of such a thing and looks at me like I am an Idiot! Then he loads my feed and goes to the other guy, and I am sure telling him what I said and they both were laughing as I drove away!! This is the only feed store in my town, now everytime he loads my feed he will think I am Stupied. When he is really the stupied one.

well, there are mixed opinions about whether scratch increases the body temp, but there are several other good reasons for why u don't feed them nothing but scratch. NUTRITION is a major one...are they really gonna get all they need from scratch? NO, not by a long shot....that's the reason they sell feed and scratch, not just scratch. But whatever, people gotta learn the hard way. U might refer him here to ask about it, cause I feel bad for the chickens!

Then there you go. He's stupid, you're not.

Time and again we have heard here of the dense feed store folks out there. You now have your proof.

I over heard a feed store employee tell a man that he shouldn't seed and cover it with hay until after the last frost of the year.
hmmm, I couldn't resist asking if he would need to reseed that same lawn next year seeings it was going to freeze this winter...the reply..."Well, I don't know, I better ask about that".
Either way, they do not need to be intellegent to work there. That is why we must be wise consumers- unlike my last purchases. Duh moment for me, I ordered medicated mash and recieved medicated crumbles. 2nd bag I ordered was for medicated crumbles and it was medicated mash.
UGh. Shame on me.

When I was looking into getting chick supplies, etc, I was in the IFA and an older man asked me if I needed any help. Sure, I thought, and asked him some questions about breeds. He proceeded to tell me that I needed to get Leghorns because they lay up to 385 eggs a year. "Really?" I said. "They lay more than one egg a day?" He said, "Well, how many days are in a year?" "365" I say. Then he says, "Yep - 385 eggs a year." Needless to say, I didn't buy anything from him that day, but came straight home and logged on to BYC and read all I needed to know from all you experts!

My old feed store sucks.

Every time I go in there and ask a question I either get the stupid what is she talking about look or the very rude lady who seems to wonder why people ask questions. Then there is one guy you had to be showed what it was I was asking for because he had no idea. Not a new guy either. But the other feed store I now go to seems to have some half way intelligent workers who are nice to their customers.

tell me about it!

the other day i was at our local TSC (i know, not our feed store) and i was returning a bag of poultry feed. it was starter/grower and we needed finisher pellets for our adult ducks. my dad had bought the wrong kind...so the man at the counter says "oh, you got the right stuff, that's the pellets you need."
and i said, "it doesn't feel like pellets to me, but okay..." I was squeezing the sides of the bag to feel the contents without having to open it.
and he asks me how many ducks I have, i have two and he kind of snorted when i told him that. he then said "only two? i got 15! we're taking 13 of 'em to the fair, one of 'em got 2nd place last year, blah blah blah!"
needless to say, when we got home, I unlaced to bag only to find that it was NOT the feed i needed! what an idiot! I'm not and extremely knowledgeable poultry "person". but I was kinda frustrated when he got cocky and had nothing to back it up.....i dunno

wow, this was a long post!

IN SHORT: I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU!!!!
