people with house chickens

I would have my girls in the house immediately if they had diapers. I didn't even dream that they have them. Or are you all fooling me.

So they are outside, and i worry all the time about their combs. I think they are maybe frostbitten. But I have put vaseline on them, but get no answer from my question? If the grey tips will recover and do no harm and they will return to a nice red color in the spring. Can someone reply?

Are your girls laying? Sometimes if they aren't their hormones are a bit low and the color in the combs fades. If that's the case, when the hormones come up, so will the color and egg production. Or when you put the vaseline on, were the grey bits hard? Or soft? If hard could be frostbite. If soft it will probably be alright. And yes there are such things as chicken diapers. You can look online.

I'm taking Sunni to the vet to be out to rest as soon as they open. I found a puncture wound on the back of her head. It's not bleeding, but her head keeps smelling more and more like blood. Which is making me think she has internal bleeding.

She has lost almost all control of her neck, her pupils are fixed and won't dilate, and she's in a lot of pain. She is struggling to breath.

I've been sitting on the couch with her keeping her comfortable most of the night. Who knew a person could cry this much? I just can't stop. I just can't believe that this happened. :hit

Just saw your post......My heart goes out to you chicken mamma, how horrible...dog did alot of internal damage :-(
Poor Sunni :hugs :hit

Thank you. :hit I haven't taken her in yet. Her digestive system recovered from the shock, so I was able to get some pedialyte into her system, which helped a bit. Because of where our dog bit her, I think she may have some swelling on her brain, which is causing her symptoms (eyes not dilating, struggling to breath, loss of control in her wings, one foot, and her neck, and drowsiness). After we gave her some pedialyte, she perked up a bit and tried to preen a few feathers, and even tried to take a few steps. She couldn't keep her balance though, so she almost fell over.

She is absolutely exhausted, and is fast asleep in the safety of her little coop in my room. If she pulls through this, she will really be a little miracle. This is the second time that she has come to a near death experience. She's a fighter. I just hope she keeps fighting. This morning I really expected her to die in my arms, but now she's standing and breathing normally again. Her pupils still aren't dilating, which worries me.

I am going to ask around on here and do some research and find out if there is anything I can do to save her. But I'm not going to get my hopes up. It is still very likely that she won't make it, because of where our dog bit her, and the shock she went into. I will do what I can to save her, and I hope that I won't have to come on and post the news of her passing.

Thanks for listening everyone. I know you all understand how very important she is too me, because you have beloved chickens (and geese) of your own. :hugs

Thank you.

I'm pulling for her, more than I can say. I'm confident that all of us on here are. To us house chicken folks, these little ones are family. They have personalities, they are affectionate, they have feelings. Sunni sounds like one tough little hen, so I'm putting my money on her pulling through this. It might take some time, but I'll tell ya, chickens are resilient!

I know how much she means to you.. You are close with her like I am with mine, so I can't imagine what you're going through. Be strong, and know you have friends here no matter what happens. If you need to talk, don't hesitate to PM me.

Oh no MsChickenMomma, that is devastating! I read your post earlier but didn't have time to reply, and when I saw there were 3 new posts on this thread I cringed as I clicked because I didn't want to hear that she passed. I'm so glad she's doing better! I'm rooting for little Sunni. I'll keep you both in my prayers.

I'm praying to God that she will pull through. Have you gone to the vet yet?
