people with house chickens

Hey guys! My account turned 5 years old today! Woo-hoo! I'm attempting to encourage my chicken to lay eggs. Any advice on where I can put a nestbox in my indoor chicken's cage? It is kind of small so I'm hoping to put it in the best spot possible. If I put it in either of the 2 back corners it will get pooped on from the roost perch. If I put it either of the 2 front corners I have to find a new spot for her bottom food bowls. Then i had this idea to put up off of the roost on the one side and then it wouldn't affect her bottom space. However I'm not sure if a chicken will lay in a nest that is off the ground. I can't cut the bars of the cage so I can't hang one on the outside. Oh and how big should a bantam chickens nest box be and should it be covered? I want to make one for her but I need ideas. I was thinking about just a box with a hole in it and a removable lid. Let me know what you think guys!
Congrats on 5 years!!! I would say stick to the floor. Especially with a Cochin. It'll get crapped in/on regardless - mine does. As long as it's big enough for your chicken to fit her fluffy butt into, it's big enough. I use the plywood one Tractor Supply sells for like $7. Before that, I just used a cardboard box and cut the sides from back to front at a 45 degree angle. I usually leave a 2 inch wall at the front so the straw stays in. I just use Timothy hay, and my hen makes happy little clucky noises as she moves the hay around to make her ideal nest. Yours will probably end up sleeping in there as well. I took the perch out of my coop entirely because mine don't use it at all anymore. As far as a lid, some birds like them, some don't. I bought an enclosed one at first, and my hen refused to go anywhere near it. Open is usually the way to go anyway, since more light = more eggs! My little sizzle is currently on a 9 day streak!

We are supposed to go to Tractor Supply later, but I cant! They are starting the Chick days! Finn would absolutely kill me if I brought home another chicken though.

muffy was pretty upset about droplet. I cant decide if im gunna keep her inside or put her outside. muffy is warmng up.. just lots of attention to both and having them with a cage between them helps then they can be around eachother no damage lol.

So cute!

I'm glad Finn likes Marcy and she likes him. I gave Marcy a bath today, and when she was done she flew right out. I picked her up and she sat on my lap! Then I ended up holding her like this:

She was like that for about 10 minutes, with her beak and neck resting on my shoulder! Our most skittish duck is the most affectionate!

You are killing me with all this duck cuteness!!! Haven't we been over this before? Hahaha :p

Do any of you have a house chicken that will literally do anything for treats?

Sunni is so food driven. It's hilarious! She'll jump 6 inches into the air, hop down the stairs, run through the house, etc for treats. Her favorite treats are animal crackers, yogurt, cheese, and bread. She learned to come when I call her name because of treats.

All I have to do is say "Sunni!" or "C'mon Sunni!" when I'm in another room and she'll come running.

She also knows which cupboard the animal crackers come from. If I even open that cupboard an inch when she's within eyesight of me, she'll run full speed through the house. She looks like a little dinosaur when she runs, too. :lau

That's so cute! Do you think Marcy will stay in the house? Or is she just in there temporarily?

Finn doesn't know his name, so I have to say "chick chick" really fast, because that's what I called him when he was a baby. I had a brownie today and I was sitting on the floor, and he came running from the other room. He climbed right onto my lap and then kept walking up my side and almost jumped on the plate! Finn has no manners, lol!
