people with house chickens

You guys!!!!!

I just got home from work and found this:
400

Enzo, my magical crowing house pullet is now a hen!!!!! I'm so ridiculously proud of my little velociraptor :) this is a wonderful day!

That is so awesome! Congrats :)

I ruined my chickens like that too. They wait until they come inside every evening to sham dust bath on their towels and sheets.

Sunni's favorite place to take dust baths is on a brown dog bed. She wore down a big circular spot in the foam from spending so much time scratching around on it.

Oh Ashley, she is absolutely GORGEOUS in the sunshine!!! Give her kisses... BTW don't know if I ever told you, but I am from up in that area. Used to live in Shelby and moved south to Niles. I was up there March 5th-19th to visit my daughter and new grandson. I do miss the area, esp Lake Michigan! I got my first Siamese kitty from a great breeder in Holland. Since then, I only adopt or rescue though.

We have 6 cats together, and 2 dogs (rescues). With our 4 chickens and 5 chicks!

Zoo? YEP!!

Thank you! We actually like to call Sunni, "Sunni Sunshine" because of how pretty she looks in it. It really brings out her colors. I haven't been down to Lake Michigan in years! We've just been too busy. I'm hoping to be able to make a trip down there this Summer.

Congrats to you and little Enzo!! Such a cute little egg! I remember Sunni was so proud of herself after she laid her first egg. I think I actually have a picture of her shortly after laying it too.

Here it is!

there is no reason to degrade yourself. Please don't say you sound "dumb" it kind of hurts my feelings.

If you have a layer formula, you need to get chick starter ASAP. The extra calcium in the layer is bad for chick's and it doesn't have enough protein for growing chicks.

Fermented feed is something you make yourself. You take their chick crumbles add water, stir occasionally and in three days, it's"done." Add more food and water daily to keep the culture going. There are many threads on BYC about fermented feed.

You can also use the chick grit to help w/ the digestion. My SLW & Ideals love it for some reason.

Ms Chicken Momma, idk how true this is but my chicken breeder told me that she sold a man one of her BR roo's & he came back the next wk telling her that the roo was broken b/c he didn't crow EVER. She said no he's not broken lol, they only crow if they hear another roo crowing & take that as a competition. So like I said idk how true it is but she an awesome breeder & knows her stuff down here in Louisiana.

Hmm.... I've never heard of that. I used to have just one rooster, and he crowed all the time. When I had two roosters, they would have crowing "wars" all day long. Even when I went back to just having the one rooster, Rodney would still crow about every 10-15 minutes. Sometimes more or less depending on his mood.

My roosters have crowing 'wars' and it is super annoying. They also have regular wars where they all-out fight, but I've always caught them before either one has gotten seriously hurt. They're always separated but a few times they have gotten out and fought with each other. It's kinda scary and one time when I intervened they beat up my hand. It's crazy what some animals will do to move up the ranks.

Since the weather has been gorgeous down here in GA, my house hens Helen and Crazy Lucy have been going nuts in the mornings! They can't wait for me to get them outdoors so they can dig and bug hunt around the bushes and just outside their pen. They cackle like crazy hens:cd
but as soon as I open the front door they about trip over themselves to get outside! It is too funny... Then around 1 I put them in their pen with water and food and leave them out till 630. When I open their pen door they run in the house to their room to lay their eggs. So funny. I give them treats when they come in like cut up veggies and fruits mixed with leftovers. Tomorrow they get their tuna and whole wheat pasta. Still trying to put weight back on them after being sick with mite infestation while I was gone....DH didn't notice, but he doesn't pick them up like I do. They are doing much better now :)
