I will preface this by saying I am not handy AT ALL.

I want a small free standing chicken perch that is about 5in off the ground or so. My hens seem to like sitting on top of their house or on milk crates when I let them out of the run. Being chonky orpingtons, they don't try to go up much higher than that. There is not enough space in the run to put milk crates in there. I looked at omlet perch, but it will be a PIA to install. The freestanding perches on amazon look like crap and probably better for chicks.

Any recommendations on how to make one that will be *easy*. I have just about every tool on the planet in my basement (came with the house when I bought it) I just don't know how to use any of them.

We JUST made a free standing perch out of one 2x4x8 untreated wood today. We cut the wood into 42", 18", 18" sections. And nailed the three pieces into a long bench (18" bars as legs on each end of the 42"), and used the leftover piece and another scrap wood (2"x2"x 30") bar at the base of each leg to stabilize the stand. (perpendicular, skew lines to the long 42")

We've made a lower (6 inch tall) version of this as a perch stand that I moved it around in the run, very handy to have - since it's shorter, I only needed to use one end to stabilize the stand.)

We are adding the new perch stand in the coop to discourage chickens sleeping in the nesting boxes - I'll see if they use it tonight!

To the rescue. :highfive:
Here is my suggestion, and it is functional, and nice. Locate a tree branch about 3 inch diameter.. The length,,, of course determined by your needs. You will also need two boards. I suggest 12 inch by 24 inch , 1.1/2 inches thick. You can often get such pieces for little $$$ from where lumber is sold. These would be cutoffs.
Now the challenging portion. ,,,,,, Find a relative,, friend,, or neighbor that can help you out. :thumbsup
Job is easy and short,,,, just attach boards to ends of log with 2 screws.
I tried my best to illustrate what I'm talking about. :old
The red thing is the screw,, and in blue is outline of one of the boards.
