I cut down a young tree that had been shaded to death and happened to have a trunk ranging from 3-4" in diameter. I opted to leave the bark on because it was a nice, semi-smooth texture so I sprayed it with Neem oil and left it in the sun to dry. The birds seem happy and comfortable and their roost is plenty sturdy (rafter-hung using galvanized pipe hangers).

I know it is expensive, but we used hand rail boards from the big box store for our roosts. They are rounded, so the girls have a better grip, and they really seem to enjoy them!

I am lucky enough to live in the woods and have a abundance of branches. I have them tacked in my coops in several different ways. They are usually around 2 1/2 inches at least as the chicken likes to sit on it's feet so making them bigger makes for easier sitting...at least they seem to think so. If I notice they are getting dirty I take them out and go cut some new ones. Might not work for others but it sure works for me. I position them in different places when I replace them and they seem to like that.
