Perch varieties

What do yall prefer to use as a perch? Round, square, or flat 2x4?
What are the pros and cons of each?

I use round tree limbs for my chickens - 2.5 inches or so in diameter. For my turkeys I use wide (flat) side of a 2 x 10.

Since chickens sit rather than grip a perch, a 2 x 4 on the flat works well for a roost. Chickens have pretty good sized feet, so it seems that something smaller would be uncomfortable. Conventional recommendations suggest that the flat of the 2 x 4 allows them to sit on their feet, keeping them warm in winter.

I use 2 x 4 placed about 12 inches out from the wall and at least that far from the ceiling.
