Perdue: Just found part of soft shell in her poop? Good or Bad?

Obelisk laid a rubber egg the other day and skipped the next day. She laid a regular egg today. So it's not an all the time thing...
Have you, yourself, tried reaching the egg? When Obelisk was eggbound I did the warm baths and also rubbed her tummy front to back to see if maybe the egg would move into the right position to be laid...It did work...she laid a soft-shelled, rubber egg the next day. This was when she was a newbie layer too.

dlhunicorn's advice about the calcium gluconate is good - it did wonders for a hen of mine who was in a similar state. However, it isn't easy stuff to find. I got some from my vet, but it isn't a common thing, and she had to dive deep into her pharmacy closet to find any.

If she was egg-bound, it could have broken and is now being expelled. One of the last-resort methods for removing a stuck egg is to break it yourself and get it out that way (I've never tried it), but you are supposed to be very careful of the shell edges. How soft are the shell pieces you found? Can you fish around inside and see if any more will come out? Any luck with finding calcium gluconate? It helps to restore peristaltic (sp?) action by improving muscle tone.

The two little pieces were very very soft but definitely egg shell. I will try to see if I can fish any out at her next warm bath.

I will also order the calcium gluconate from Jeffers today. (Thank you)

FYI: Two different New Jersey vets are willing to treat her. One wants to ultrasound her at a cost of $300 before doing anything! Then suggests some kind of shot to stop her from laying at $125 a pop! .... or to spay her.

The other vet may be a little less expensive but not by much.

So I just hope and pray what I am doing will continue to work as I cannot afford this type of expense.

Should I keep lubing her up with Prep H?

I didn't realize that Calcium gluconate is an injectable. I've never injected a chicken before. Where do you do the injection? Can't I buy some type of liquid calcium?

Hmmm - the kind I got from my vet was a liquid, sort of thick and yellowish, as I recall. All I had to do was eyedropper it down the throat (make sure you go past the windpipe!). However, I soon discovered that my girl was happy to eat it when I just dropped some onto a scrap of bread. That was far less of a struggle.

I just ordered a calcium supplement called Neo-Calglucon from Discount Pets. It is actually a human supplement also used for pets.

I called two pharmacies (Wal-Greens was one of the pharmacies I called) to buy this stuff. Both pharmacies told me they don't sell this and it isn't made anymore. I guess they couldn't be bothered to look it up as..........

I went on line and lo and behold it took me one minute to find the stuff.

So I ordered it. I hope it arrives within the next couple of days. In the meantime, I will continue with Ensure.

Neo-Calglucon works great. I used to use it when I was a parrot breeder many years ago.

Should I keep lubing her up with Prep H?

Just a quick question. If Prep H is used on prolapse, why would it be used if egg-bound? Doesn't the Prep H help pull tissue back in? Or is there a different PrepH?
Thanks.
