Permethrin Toxicity

Are there any vets who see poultry in your area? I have a vet who isn't currently seeing chickens (due to Bird Flu), but was willing to do a telehealth appointment with my chicken. (They quoted me $60, but ultimately didn't charge me anything).

I would hold off on further dosing until you are sure they are all fully recovered from this overdose. Perhaps people here will have some non-insecticide suggestions for slowing down the mites.

I'm so sorry this happened. I've experienced losing a bird due to following advice that was not the best (though well-intended, I'm sure).

Generally, supporting your chicken and giving her time to recover is probably the best: making sure she is hydrated, has plenty of access to food, and resisting doing too much and stressing her out.

Thank you so very much.☺️

We don’t have a vet. And I just added that I think there is something else going on with her. I responded to another helpful post that was the first response and we have been going back and forth. I’m not sure if you read through. I’m aware now that Perm *does not* treat Depluming Mites and I’m going to have to treat with Ivermectin. I’m definitely going to give everyone a break before I continue.

I’m concerned about the walking and balancing issue with my gal I have inside.

My leghorn . We have been trying to figure out what was going on with her. She has had a bald butt for 6-8 months, and her feathers started to thin out on her back and her tail feathers are almost like sticks.

I have Ivermectin pour on and I was told I could do a dip with that as well. Now with what you are telling me, I’m thinking of giving everyone a week or two before I treat with Ivermectin. I’m just going to get it in my head that the mites are not dead because I didn’t use the correct treatment.

The girl I have inside I noticed a couple weeks ago she was not roosting on her roosting spot. She started to take up residency in the shit box. So every night when I got home from work, I went out and I saw her and I would put her on her roost bar and she would immediately get down and not want to have anything to do with it, so after a couple of days and weeks of me having to move her, this whole dip thing happened and now I noticed that when she walks, she is taking little steps and stepping on her toes. She won’t lay down to sleep because of the balance issue. I’m thinking this is something that started waaay before the dip. This is something else. She wants to be back with her friends.

Photos of the Leghorn and your housing?

IF there are body mites in the housing, it must be cleaned out and treated. If you are only treating the birds, you're not eliminating the Mites.

Feather loss and poor feather quality can be due to a number of things. Birds picking and plucking at each other is a major cause of feather loss, raggedy feathers, bald butts, etc. Observe your flock to see if they are plucking feathers, especially during roosting.

Birds that have Depluming Mites are extremely uncomfortable and will spend a great amount of time intensely picking at their own feathers, pulling them out and digging at their skin causing skin wounds, oozing wounds and damage.

I do see nipped and worn feathers on the Barred Rock, but not to the extent I would expect to see if she had Depluming Mites.
I agree, it seems like she probably has something else going on (in addition to?) external parasites.

What do you feed, including treats? Balance issues can be due to disease, infection, reproductive problems, etc. So many things.
I'd get the Calcium into her. Start her on 400IU Vitamin E and 1/4 tablet B-Complex daily too. Give her a treat of egg daily to help with the uptake of E.

Check her over to see that her crop is emptying, that she has not scabs or problems with her feet/bottom of the feet, that she has no infection in the ears, etc.

It's up to you whether she stays in or not. Most birds prefer to be with their flock and I leave mine with their flock and just pull them aside whenever one needs treatment/TLC. I only move a bird if they are getting picked on by the others.

As for the Ivermectin. I would wait and access the flock, see how they are doing before giving another other treatments for parasites. Ivermectin Pour On is applied topically on the skin, it's not used as a dip (there are other products with Ivermectin that *can* be used as a dip). Dipping birds is stressful for them, so it's not something that I would personally do.
Unlike Permethrin or Spinosad, Ivermectin is a medication and is absorbed into the bloodstream through the skin, so when Depluming Mites feed on the blood they are dosed and die.

Remember. Feathers that are worn, broken, ragged, look bad, etc., and if the feather shaft is still intact in the skin, the feathers will not be replaced until birds go through a molt. So, even with treatment and you eliminate external parasites, the feathers that look bad will not magically all look "better". The birds will still look raggedy and worn until they molt which is usually in the fall.

Yes, I meant that no matter what other treatment you pursue, you might want to hold off until you think they are healthy enough to do well with it.

Wyorp's reply above is very thorough!

Thank you! 😊 I will absolutely hold off for a long while. These babies have been tortured enough. 😢
