When I went out to feed the chickens this morning before work, I found that our feral cat had a litter of kittens in the nesting box. The persistent broody that I have is convinced that she hatched the kittens! So far, both momma cat and momma chicken seem to be getting along very well! The kittens snuggle with momma cat when she's there so they can nurse, but momma hen watches them when the mother cat goes out to eat. Animals are so amazing!

Huh! Have seen a couple pics of broodies and kittens.
Wonder how it will shake out...will it 'break her broody'?
Hope you keep this thread updated with the unfolding story!

When I went out this morning, the momma cat was waiting to be fed, and the hen was in the nesting boxes warning the other hens away from "her" kittens - had the outstretched wings, the growl, all of it. She really does think they're hers. I'll post updates and pictures.

Update: The kittens are now around 4 weeks old and are exploring everything in their environment. They've learned that I bring food twice a day and will come my way when they see me, along with all my chickens. My husband calls all of them "The Welfare Brigade". While they were still small, the broody was interfering with the mother cat, so she moved them. The broody did break, by the way. When we got a rainy spell, she moved them back, but into the other coop and there were only three of them, so one did not make it somehow. She moved them back out when the rain dried up, but then back again about a week ago and they've stayed with the chickens since then. They all mingle together and seem to get along just fine. In fact, when I feed the cats, I lock them in the small coop so the chickens don't chase them out of their food! I will try to get some recent photos this weekend and post them on the site.
