We have a real issue with red mite in our two coops at the moment. I’m using diatomaceous earth (Smite) mixed in to their bedding, I’ve steam cleaned the coops and used Jays fluid for a deep clean. It gets rid of the mites for a few weeks then they are back. Both coops have felt roof coverings, I have removed them and cleaned beneath the felt.

I’m at my wits end, the hens still seem very healthy and dust bathe regularly, but at night if I check the coop I can see mites on the walls. Some of the hens have taken to roosting outside over summer, and I’m wondering if they are avoiding the coop?

I’m considering trying an insecticide smoke bomb in both coops, has anyone tried this before to get rid of red mite? If it doesn’t work then I’m thinking we may just have to replace both coops.

Any advice appreciated!

Unfortunately you've been using the wrong product....DE won't do a thing for mites.

Can you get some permethrin?
