I have a silkie who has tried to hatch out a brood three times already this winter. For the last four days she hasn't left the nest so today I went ahead and gave in. I put a leghorn egg and two augsberger eggs under her so here's to hoping that she will make a good mother.

Day one, down.

I hope so. Problem is, I will be in the hospital with my husband for the next three weeks for brain surgery so outside of coming home to check on the chickens and dog every day briefly before returning, I won't get to really get to watch her much. The clutch should hatch the weekend before he should come home. I hope everything goes well.

Yep, a lot. We are also building a house and hope to move in in March. My father-in-law is the contractor and my husband was helping; though that will end as of Tuesday since he'll have to recover and all. Oh well, if you don't have a busy life you have a boring one. I'd like to try that some time though. ;)

I went out to check on my mother hen outside. She has gathered an extra leghorn egg and another two augsberger eggs as well. She's feeling ambitious for a small girl. I will have to move her so she doesn't just keep adding eggs to her nest. Tried before coming in but she wasn't having any of it. If it is dark enough in the morning when I come home (I work nights) I'll have to do it then. I did mark each egg though so hopefully I'll be able to separate any that might be laid before I can move her.

Day two is down.

The more I think about it, the more I think I might just lock the other hens out of the coop instead of trying to move her. She is the coop that I've brooded many chicks in before and I have other coops that the hens can go in to sleep and lay their eggs. I'd rather upset the few that use that coop with her than her again. I'll wait until everyone leaves for the morning and just close the coop off. I'll open it up in the evenings if momma wants up but I'll put food and water in another corner as well. Trying to make this setting as calm and easy for her as possible.
