Personal opinions on favourite breed and why, please comment so I can have a idea of which is best

I have 2 each of Buff Orpington, Black Australorp and EE's. The BO's and BA's are the sweetest things. They love to be held and will come to us looking for attention. I also think they are beautiful birds with the soft golden feathers of the BO and the gorgeous green tinged feathers in the BA's. My EE's are beautiful and follow me around, but don't like being held like the others. I also have Silkies and mille fleur d'Uccles. If you want pets go with either of these bantam breeds. My d'Uccles fly onto my arms and shoulders while I am walking around. They will fly onto my lap and take a nap if I sit still long enough. The Silkies are a delight to watch, they make me laugh with their antics. Have fun researching and making your choices!

What are you looking for in a chicken?? Is it eggs, Meat, pets???
Well to be honest I really like hens which are show type birds, ones which look really nice but are aswell good layers, if I went to an auction would you roughly know the prices of which some hens can be bought for?

I have just had a look at a pic of those Mille flour d'uccles and liked what I saw, I might look into those for being one of my six breeds

Easter Eggers are my favorites. They come in lots of different colors, lay beautiful blue and green eggs, and are NOT constantly broody like my Ameraucanas....there are so many reasons why EE are the best chickens. Who can resist the chicks' tiny fuzzy bearded faces!?

Jus had a look at picture of an Easter egger and they look quite nice but they look similar to my friends welsummers and I'm looking for more of a fancier, show bird, but still nice hen:)

Hello Hen Breeder. Seeing as how your are a Brit, I am thinking you should go for British birds! So if I were buying in the UK, I would get:

-Cream Legbars -- they are too dear over here in the States but I would love to own one. Crests, blue eggs, sex-linked whats not to like?
-I also love Welsummers because of their lovely dark brown eggs--everyone comments on the dark brown speckles
-I would get a Brahma (or even two- a Light and a Dark Brahma for variety) Great personalities
-My Barred Rock is my best layer so I will always have one of them in my mixed flock.
That leaves me 1 or 2 choices depending on if I got one or two Brahmas
-Silkies are adorable althought I've never owned one so might get one just because (or a showgirl or a frizzle)

I would pick one of the following to round out my flock: Orpington, Sex-link, Coronation Sussex, Marans--probably go for the Orpington because thery are very sweet birds.

This flock would give you a tremdous variety of colors and body types--something I really like in a mixed flock.

I have no idea how expensive birds are over there so you will have to research on your own.

Just another thought for you. If you want to keep your chickens and not get rid of them when they stop laying or slow down as they age, you may want to start with just three and wait about 2-3 years to get the next 3. That way you will freshen up your flock as the first bunch slows down. If you get 6 all at once, they will lay fewer eggs as they age and you won't have room for the more productive youngsters.

Hi there, really good I dea with just starting with 3 hens and all and I looked at a picture of a Sussex coronation and they are great looking hens instead of the black cape it's a silver one! I also really like frizzles, do I think that is 2 of my coops filled, now just 4 to go!

Well I go to auctions all the time to look at my chickens. I did get my rooster from an auction. Well 1 hen who had 4 little pullet chicks with her went for $25. Some others range from $4 dollars to $12.50. Hope this helps.

Here are some birds that you might want to check out (I like all of these myself):
-Langshan- they are a large, stately bird with a gorgeous sheen to their black feathers and are very regal looking
-Sebrights- they are a cute little bantam with lots of personality that do well in shows
-Belgian d'Anvers- they are a friendly bantam, do well in shows, and come in a variety of colors (or at least they do here)
-Vorwerk- a little bit rarer breed similar to lakenvelder, unique looking, do well in shows, small http://cdn.backyardchickens.com/f/fa/800x600px-LL-fa116c17_vorwerk-20455-220038.jpeg
