My EEs have been shy for the most part, although my oldest one tamed a bit as she aged and didn't mind being petted anymore. My SLW never seemed afraid of me, but she didn't want to be around me anyway because she had better things to do. My Orp is relatively gentle, although she's got a small mean streak in her. She definitely isn't flighty, and right now she seems to be my coop queen since she is currently the oldest. My last two leghorns (brown and white) have been fairly smart, and very independent, to the point where they would rather go off on their own when everyone is freeranging (my white got eaten by a hawk this way). When the brown was a baby she was constantly jumping out of the brooder and running off to play by herself, and I'd only know about it because the Orpington was left alone, crying.
Now the Sussex is pretty special. She's the first one I've had, and as a baby she used to jump the barrier into "chick jail" in the brooder to visit my Hamburg, then jump back when the Welsummer got lonely. She's a genius compared to the others. When I chased a mouse through the coop a few months ago, all the chickens squawked in surprise, but the Sussex immediately dove after it and tried to catch it. She's not overly friendly--she doesn't rub up against my leg when I walk in the coop or anything, but if I've got something that interests her she doesn't mind being petted at all.
