persuasive speech for school - need some help!! Comparing Hatcheries.

I hope I am posting this in the right section, sorry if not!


I am doing a speech on why "backyard breeders" (in the sense of a breeder breeding true to the breed) are better than hatcheries/hatchery stock. and reasons why it is better to buy locally hatched chicks from these breeders rather than having them shipped from hatcheries.
What are some of your opinions on this topic?

Does anyone have any comparison pictures, or articles about this?? I know there was a thread somewhere on here with pictures, but I cant seem to find it now!!

I think of the difference as similar to the difference between puppy mills and legitimate dog breeders. There are some great videos and pics of the inside of hatcheries... pretty eye-opening even to me. You could use some of those, depending on the audience.

This is for a college communications class...so basically, I am as free to wander as I like lol...

I'll check out youtube for some inside the hatchery things...I'm trying to find a source for quality breeders...much harder to find info about that than "big time" hatcheries!

you should compare the asils that hatcherys sell they are terible compared to ones that breeders sell

Hatcheries do not do the best job when you are looking for show stock. They are in the business to allow small amounts of chicks to be bought at a cheap price for the home flock owner. They do the best they can but they aren't going to pay some breeders price for show stock that may or may not lay well.

A show breeder will select birds that fit the standard and the "at the time" opinion of the judges of what the standard is. They are not selecting for production issues but physical looks. Their stock may or may not lay well at all as they will be inbred to obtain the desired look.

But for production birds (layers, meat birds), a commercial enterprise do the best job by far. I'm not talking about small hatcheries but the commercial ones that have controlled breeding stock that are selected for production based on feed consumption, hardiness, etc. Their chickens may not be the most eye appealing but they get the largest amount of eggs/meat on table in the fastest time and for the least amount of feed. They will be producing F1's from 2 inbred lines to give them maximum production.
