But I think free ranging depends on factors such as:
What kind of predators do you have?
How close to a road are you?
How close are you to neighbors and what kind of neighbors are they?
Are you around all the time to keep an eye on what's going on?

No matter how much land you have, you can't necessarily control where the curious peas will wander off to, and you don't want them to get into trouble...

That about wraps it up right there, mine stay where I want them until they see something that does not belong then they will persue it, if they go to honking my dogs will go see what is going on, I have a couple dogs that even walk with the peas in the early morning when they sence a wild critter is in the area, these past few days it has been a bobcat, lots of land clearing going on and it is running some of the wildlife my way.

Peas are pretty darn savey and I have never lost any to wild thangs, a close call a couple years ago but again no food for wild thang.

I live in the country unfortunately I-35 runs along side of the front yard. We live about 300 feet from I-35. The rest of the property has a wooded area around the yard is about 2 acres and is pretty clear. We have lots of bugs, grasshoppers, ticks, squash bugs, etc!

You can teach them to stay away from that road , it is the same way you train a dog not to do something be there to catch them every time and herd um back behind the house, never let them in front of the house ever. They will test you once in a while when they see something, hence ya gotta check on them.

I have a driveway that runs between my daughters place and mine, it is my property but from day one they have not been allowed over there as much as my daughter likes them there is a chance they will get on her nice vehicles and their big boy toys , with her help every batch that I have raised and turned loose have had to be taught to stay on their side, funny thing is I have developed a sixth sense with my peas and get a feeling they are up to something and when I go check on them I find my feeling was right.

I go walking with my peas all the time , I also have lots of woods but I keep the ones in the safe zone clear so nothing can have a place to hide.

If you can have them free you will love it, spending time with them is easer cause they like to hang out with ya sometimes, I got one right now that helps my DH when he is working on something, I think DH kinda likes him I just hope the pea does not grow up and turn mean on me, but I do not really mess with them, they mess with me and that's ok with them
