Today I checked some of my chickens for pests (my chickens are 4-6 months of age). Today I checked my hens for pests in around the vent and saw some. One chicken had a Scab and next to her vent and a little black bug running around. Another hen had little red/clear bugs running around her vent area. I didn't check under the wings since checking the vent area was already a big ordeal.

1. What kinds of pests does it sound like my hens have?

2. How can I help them? Will DE work for the bugs I described?

I'd use a permethrin product like a 'poultry dust', no egg withdrawal.

DE won't do the job on an infestation.
Sevin is so darn toxic, kills everything, including bees/pollinators and has just been labeled with a lifetime withdrawal on poultry.

Thank you. I was going to use 7 duct but I didn't know it would have an affect on bees. I am planning on getting bees soon, so that wouldn't be the ideal solution. Thanks again, I'll look for some permethrin spray/dust.

How do I clean the inside of my coop? Do I just squirt the permethrin under the wings and around the vent? Also, will it hurt my chickens if accidentally squirt their vent? Might sound like a dumb question.

I just found a nest of some sort of bug. I think they might be lice. Do live even have nests? I found the best underneath neath a big clump of dirt (it's a moist place).
Lice only can live on animals, but might be mites.
Do some googling and find some images of lice and mites, then get out your magnifying glass and ID what you are finding in your coop and on your birds.
