Hi to all you chicken experts out there, I am in need of some chicken advice.

I would like to get some chicken that would make good pets for my little girls and also lay me some eggs! I am planning on getting 3 hens.

I have been looking at the Silkie breed, can any one tell me more about their egg production, amount, size and taste?

I have read they tend to get broody and then do not lay eggs, is this a regular issue?

I have considered getting some Silkies and maybe also a different breed that will have better egg production. Does anyone have any advice on mixing breeds and which breeds go well together? I have been looking at the Sussex breed.

I have also been trying to find information on the legality of raising eggs in my backyard, I live in Alpharetta, Georgia. Any one have any info or experience regarding this issue?

If you are from my area and have any Silkie chicks or now of where I would be ably to find some, please let me know!

Thanks for taking the time to read my post!

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan

Silkies are great as pets, but don't as a rule lay a lot of eggs, and the eggs are small. Same with bantam cochins. I love my speckled sussex, they are very friendly and lay a decent number of average-sized eggs. Orpingtons may be another breed to consider, along with Australorps.

from Alabama. Glad you joined us. Silkies are extremely broody - one of ours started setting on a nest just a couple wks after laying her 1st egg & we've had them to go broody no matter if we collect eggs twice a day. But they certainly do make great mamas lol. Have you checked out the Breeds section for help with deciding on breeds. Good luck
