Thank you for your words of wisdom, and for sharing your technique. As kids, at the county fair, we would always sit around with our birds upside-down in our laps... it always seemed to induce an almost hypnotic state. I think between Mike and I, we can institute a two part firm respect/love him to submission plan. As to the caponizing, I do want to be better informed by seeking DVM's that have experience with the proceedure . And I will discuss the possible dangers. I did have a Vet tell me today that the testicles would grow back?! To me that seemed odd, but if that were indeed what would happen then it would be a pointless risk. Crazy to think they used to sell a kit for doing the job through the Sears catalog! Oh how times change.
you're welcome
Anything to help that cutie patootie you have!
The vet was correct, but he didn't elaborate on why. Everything I've seen of the proceedure is very tricky because of the location of the organs, and the size (veeeeeeeeeery small). It is very common to actually mistakenly not get everything on the first try. This will result in (at least one) the part regrowing itself. And all you need is one to produce testosterone. Although it'd be interesting to see if anyone's had this happen, and noticed a reduction in aggression just because less testosterone is being secreted.... hm...
I agree that it's crazy that people just did this at home without anything more than a kit. It used to be very popular to do on meat birds, which very rarely people bond with. So I guess if they made a mistake and had a bird die, no big deal, just dinner early. I personally am horrified to experimentally operate on a live animal that is fully aware (shiver), but times sure are different, and people were different back then (for better or worse, who knows?).
